What We're Looking For:

Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Project Manager - Highway/Roadway Design for our New York office who is eager to support our Highway Design group and continue growing their career with our firm. The successful candidate will have the ability to assist and lead the design and development of roadway design tasks and plans preparation. We are specifically looking for candidates that specializes in design of roadway geometry, roadside protection, ADA, site work, utilities, development of contract documents (specifications, plans, cost estimates, , Maintenance and Protection of Traffic, cost/benefit alternative analyses, stakeholder coordination, and technical proposal contributions.

Experience with agencies, such as NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYCDDC, NJDOT, NJTA, and/or PANYNJ is preferred.

What You'll Do:
  • Work on a team of engineers with design and production of highway construction drawings
  • Prepare and review project bid documents, including plans, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates; perform roadway design tasks such as horizontal and vertical geometry, 3D corridor modeling, and design calculations.
  • Holds responsibilities of a Task Lead and communicate with the Project Managers on key issues and project progress.
  • Prepare moderately complex studies, construction documents, drawings, maps, reports, and supporting documentation
  • Occasionally visit work site(s) and report findings to other experienced engineers and/or project managers
  • Communicate with clients regarding project issues, holds and attends meetings
  • Defines scope of work and staff-hour requirements for client proposals
  • Assist project managers in ensuring that project/task schedules and budgets are met
  • Assists in technical aspects of proposal production
  • Ensure work efforts for assigned tasks fall within established budgets
  • Mentor technicians and less experienced engineers and engineers-in-training
  • Maintain knowledge through completion of various training initiatives: attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, attending in-house systems/management training
  • Reviews shop drawings for conformance with Contract Plans.
What You Need to Succeed:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s degree preferred)
  • 15+ years of highway design experience supporting transportation clients, including agencies such as NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYCDDC, NJDOT, NJTA, and/or PANYNJ
  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local design standards, including: AASHTO Design Guidelines for Highways and Streets FHWA MUTCD NYS DOT, NYC DDC, and NYC DOT standards
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license in New York (NJ license a plus)
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor multi‑disciplinary teams on complex transportation projects
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, essential for client interaction and long‑term success
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply company policies, procedures, software tools, and client standards
Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $213,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
