Network Engineer - Temporary

Job Description Core Duties

The PPPL Network Engineer is responsible for all IT networks that allow PPPL to communicate both internally and externally. The primary duties include supporting upgrades of existing network architecture, maintaining computer networks, hardware, software, and other related systems, facilitating remote user access to system resources, supporting PPPL experimental requirements, ensuring the timely delivery of critical data, and replacing faulty network hardware components when necessary.

The Network Engineer will also install new systems to improve the company’s communication infrastructure while maintaining existing networks.

• Support PPPL projects and initiatives with network engineering requirements, including experiments, construction projects, hardware/software upgrades, and new cloud and on-premise software applications.
• Support outages and failures as needed.
• Install cabling and equipment for new connectivity requirements and hardware upgrades.
• Remove and clean up equipment and cabling no longer in production.
• Provide support for remote user access to computer resources.

• Review and respond to incoming trouble tickets.

• Provide second level support for remote access VPN user issues; serve as escalation point for the PPPL help desk.
• Work with the cyber team to implement changes to features and functionality as needed.

• Respond to VoIP phone and server outages.
• Troubleshoot user phone issues on the PPPL network, verifying connectivity and server‑to‑phone communications, including the use of Wireshark.
• Assist the telecom engineer in supporting new projects and initiatives.

• Project documentation for experiments and PPPL infrastructure initiatives.
• Network diagrams and procedures.
• Spreadsheets.
• Databases.
• FAQs.

Other related duties may be assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in a computer‑related field such as programming, computer science, engineering, or a related degree; equivalent training and work experience may also be considered.
• Demonstrable, hands‑on network engineering experience, either working with IT systems or in network administration.
• At least five years of experience in a Network Engineer role or a related IT support role.
• Experience in wireless standards, protocols, and equipment, including specialized wireless technologies and Wi‑Fi test/heat‑mapping equipment.
• Demonstrable experience with basic routing/switching technologies, wireless, VoIP, VPN, SNMP management, and data mirroring.
• Background with Linux scripting, IT automation tools, DNS/DHCP management (Infoblox), and experience with IPv6 migration is a plus.
• Team player with good interpersonal skills.
• Strong communication and writing skills.
• Ability to simultaneously work on and manage multiple projects.

CCNA or equivalent knowledge required.

• General office setting.
• Occasional lifting of IT equipment (approximately 20 lbs, e.g., desktop computer/server or computer monitor).

• Remote work capabilities may be available some of the time, up to 1–2 days per week.
