Job Description & How to Apply Below
About the Company
A well-funded health technology startup is developing a first-of-its-kind wearable biosensor platform for continuous, non-invasive health monitoring. The company's technology is embedded directly into everyday dental products, enabling real-time biomarker analysis and wireless data transmission to mobile devices and clinical teams - shifting health diagnostics from periodic snapshots to continuous, actionable insight. This is an early-stage, high-impact opportunity to help shape the physical architecture of a platform with significant implications for chronic disease management and personalized medicine.
Position Overview
The company is looking for a creative and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer to join a small, fast-moving R&D team. This role focuses on the physical design, miniaturization, and integration of an ultra-compact biosensor intended for use in the oral environment. You'll own mechanical design from concept through prototype, working closely with electrical engineers, materials scientists, and clinical researchers to build something that has never existed before.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design and development of miniaturized sensor components and enclosures intended for intraoral use
- Own CAD modeling, assembly design, and detailed drawings for prototypes and production-intent parts
- Select and evaluate materials for biocompatibility, durability, and manufacturability in a challenging oral environment
- Design and iterate on form factors suitable for integration into dental products including retainers, aligners, and dentures
- Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure proper component fit, thermal management, and mechanical protection of electronic assemblies
- Develop and execute mechanical testing protocols including stress, fatigue, wear, and environmental testing
- Support design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) as the platform advances toward production
- Manage relationships with contract manufacturers, fabrication vendors, and tooling suppliers
- Contribute to design documentation, IP development, and regulatory submission materials (FDA, CE)
- Identify and mitigate mechanical risks throughout the product development lifecycle
- Perform other duties as the role evolves in a startup environment
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field
- 4+ years of hands-on mechanical engineering experience in a product development or R&D environment
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as Solid Works, Fusion 360, or equivalent
- Experience designing for miniaturization and tight geometric tolerances
- Familiarity with a broad range of manufacturing processes including injection molding, CNC machining, and additive manufacturing
- Strong understanding of material properties and selection criteria for demanding physical environments
- Comfortable working in an ambiguous, resource-constrained startup setting with shifting priorities
- Master's degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering
- Experience developing medical devices or wearable consumer electronics
- Familiarity with biocompatibility standards (ISO 10993) and FDA design controls
- Background in soft goods, flexible structures, or form factors designed for body-worn or intraoral applications
- Experience with MEMS, micro-fabrication, or chip-scale packaging
- Exposure to finite element analysis (FEA) tools for structural and thermal simulation
This is a ground-floor opportunity to own the physical design of a product that genuinely hasn't existed before.
The right candidate thrives on hands-on problem solving, is energized by miniaturization challenges, and wants to see their work directly shape a platform with real clinical impact. You'll collaborate daily with a small, highly technical team and have meaningful input into product direction from day one.
