The Assistant Engineer’s primary responsibilities include managing the operation and maintenance of the vessel’s engineering systems under the Chief Engineer’s supervision. Tasks involve performing routine and emergency repairs, conducting watches, maintaining logbooks, and ensuring crew safety. The role encompasses maintaining mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, from propulsion to auxiliary machinery, while overseeing engine room operations for both tug and barge.

• Assist the Chief Engineer and engineering personnel in operating and maintaining vessel machinery, including engines, generators, pumps, and refrigeration systems.
• Perform regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs on mechanical equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Monitor and troubleshoot engineering systems to identify and resolve issues during voyage.
• Follow safety protocols and regulations to maintain a safe working environment for crew and cargo.
• Collaborate with other crew members to coordinate operational activities and ensure smooth vessel functioning.

• USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with international and national endorsements capable of foreign voyages.
• International STCW endorsements:
  Officer in charge of an Engineering Watch (STCW III/1), Medical First Aid Provider (STCW A‑VI/4‑1), Able Seafarer‑Engine (STCW III/5), RFPEW (STCW III/4), STCW Basic Safety Training (STCW VI/1), PSC (STCW VI/2), Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) (STCW VI/6).
• National endorsements:
  Engineering Officer – Assistant Engineer Limited; QMED‑Any Rating;
  Lifeboatman;
  Ordinary Seaman;
  Wiper;
  Steward’s Department (F.H.).
• Tankerman Assistant endorsement limited to Dangerous Liquid (DL) cargoes; PIC endorsement preferred.
• Valid USCG/STCW medical certificate, renewed every 2 years.
• Valid TWIC card and U.S. passport.
• Familiarity with EMD’s and Detroit Generators is preferred.

• Maritime Academy graduate preferred.
• Prior experience as an Assistant Engineer preferred.
• ABS Nautical Systems NS5/HELM experience preferred.

• Able to work in confined spaces, carry heavy tools, climb and descend ladders, and lift loads of at least 40 pounds.
• Must meet current USCG STCW Medical Certificate requirements, renewed every 2 years.
