This position is within the Office of Facilities Management – Project Control, pending funding and Board approval.
Job DefinitionUnder direction, performs general masonry work in maintenance and construction of block, stone, and brick structures; constructs and repairs concrete structures; works with machine and hand tools; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accord with building code or accepted trade practices; leads helpers and assigns suitable tasks; performs related duties as required.
Qualifications and Requirements (Civil Service Commission)- High School diploma, vocational school completion, or approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
- Three years of experience in masonry involving brick, stone, and concrete work.
- Three years of experience in plastering.
- Driver’s license valid in New Jersey if vehicle operation is necessary for essential duties.
- Construct block, stone, and brick walls, manholes, chimneys, columns, partitions, and other structures.
- Erect or supervise scaffolding and ramps; finish joints.
- Build or lay concrete structures such as sidewalks, porches, stairs, and floors.
- Point brick or stone structures; patch plaster or stucco walls and ceilings; repair cracked or broken concrete.
- Use trowels, joiners, edgers, chisels, levels, plumb bobs, vibrators, and concrete mixers.
- Mix cement, mortar, lime, and lime mortar.
- Slake lime and temper mortar.
- Prepare from sketches, plans, and specifications as approved.
- Make time and material estimates.
- Inspect work in progress and completed work.
- Assign tasks to helpers.
- Maintain required records.
- Learn to use electronic or manual recording systems as needed.
- Knowledge of masonry problems, standard tools, materials, practices, hazards, and safety precautions.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to take safety precautions when performing tasks.
- Ability to manage equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to assign duties and maintain records.
- Ability to use electronic or manual recording systems.
- English proficiency;
