Effective July 1, 2025, the Georgia Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) has officially become Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE). Along with this transition, the curriculum and name of our advanced academy has also been updated from Motor Carrier Officer (MCO) School to Commercial Vehicle Officer (CVO) School. The new curriculum consists of seven (7) weeks of advanced training, followed by 12 weeks of field training.

This change marks a reduction from the previous 12-week curriculum, streamlining our training while maintaining high standards of preparation and professionalism.

• CVO Cadet- $48,843
• CVO1 - $62,176 (upon completion of POST certification)
• CVO2 - $65,758 annually (NAS I A&B Training and 18 months service as a Compliance Officer I)
• CVO3 - $72,509 annually (Basic HAZMAT, Cargo Tank and Bulk Packaging Training and 4 years of total sworn service)
• Senior CVO- $75,412
• Master CVO- $78,461

DPS offers a traditional pension plan of 1% per year of service, combined with a 401(k) plan with an employer match that rewards career longevity. A sworn employee receives a 5% match through year 5 and it increases 2% a year through year 10 (up to a total of 15%). Employees are not required to increase their contribution beyond 5% to receive the full employer match.

To further supplement these benefits, sworn members and dispatchers are also eligible to participate in the Peace Officers' Annuity and Benefit Fund.

Under immediate supervision and within a progressive training capacity, acquires knowledge and experience necessary to enforce applicable State and Federal laws, rules and regulations governing commercial motor vehicle and the transportation of hazardous materials. Operates and monitors electronic equipment at an inspection facility. DPS offers several opportunities for specialized assignments for Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers throughout their career.

• Patrol highways and roadways to enforce Georgia’s traffic and criminal laws as they relate to commercial vehicle and driver safety.
• Perform safety compliance inspections of commercial vehicles, drivers, and shipments of hazardous materials.
• Assist in the investigation of traffic crashes involving commercial motor vehicles.
• Utilize portable and permanent scales to screen commercial vehicles for violations of the state’s weight and dimension laws.
• As assigned, enforce state laws pertaining to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes in designated areas of the state.
• Provide public outreach and education to motor carriers, drivers, and the motoring public on commercial vehicle safety.

Applicants eligible for the CVE Officer 1 must meet one of the following requirements:

• Be a certified peace (police) officer by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.); or
• Have been notified by P.O.S.T. that an Equivalency of Training (EOT) application has been approved prior to being hired by the DPS.
• Types of officers who may be eligible for the EOT process:
• Eligible Federal Peace Officers who have graduated from the FLETC Uniformed Police Training Program.
• United States Military Police Officers (Army, Air Force, and Marines) who have graduated from their branches Basic Military Police Course and possess a general discharge under honorable conditions.
• Out-of-State Police Officers who have graduated from their states Uniform Police Academy and their certification is valid and in good standing.
• Pre-Service Candidates and Inactive Registered Georgia Peace Officers actively employed in law enforcement or who have graduated from a basic law enforcement training course.
