Overview
About the Role The primary purpose of the Apprentice Inpatient Coder position is to review hospital inpatient medical records and assign ICD-10 diagnosis codes and procedure codes that accurately reflect the reason for admission and patient severity. Follows established hospital inpatient coding guidelines and utilizes Coding Clinic and other resources to ensure compliance with national coding guidelines.
ResponsibilitiesWhat You’ll Do
- Reviews inpatient hospital medical records to assign accurate ICD‑10 diagnosis and procedure codes.
- Ensures coding reflects the patient’s reason for admission and overall severity.
- Applies established inpatient coding guidelines consistently.
- Uses Coding Clinic and other approved coding resources to maintain compliance with national coding standards.
What You’ll Bring
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Successful completion of ICD‑10 training and skill assessment as designated by the HIM department.
- Prior ICD‑10 coding experience preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, Coding Clinic, POA, and query guidelines required.
- Knowledge of CMS, Medicaid, and third‑party payer coding, billing, and compliance regulations preferred.
- Experience with encoder systems (Cl integrity 360) and Epic EHR is a plus.
- Ability to balance multiple and changing priorities.
- Must be detail‑oriented, accurate, organized, and able to work independently.
- Working knowledge of computers and internet navigation required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Outlook, and shared files.
- May be required to work evenings and/or weekends.

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is TC/2700:
Probationary Rate $39.33 - Job Rate $39.83
