Position Overview

Division of Information Technology, Newark Board of Education. 12‑month employment period. Salary range $78,099 — $95,406. Union affiliation:
Local 32. This role is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission and requires an initial provisional appointment.

Job Definition

Definition: Under limited supervision, performs complex professional work that includes development, implementation, and maintenance of LAN, MAN, WAN, and SAN environments; maintains centralized, decentralized, and remote network services, network security and data integrity; provides consultations and recommendations; troubleshoots and resolves network problems; monitors performance; conducts upgrades; may oversee SAN; performs other related duties.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Seven (7) years of professional experience in the development, implementation, and maintenance of LAN, MAN, and/or WAN environments, or equivalent with at least 18 semester hours in mathematics, computer science, information technology, and/or computer information systems.
  • For SAN administration: at least three (3) years of experience installing, configuring, and supporting network hardware/software, with one year of that time focused on SAN technologies.
  • OR a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution plus 18 semester hours in the same fields and three (3) years of professional experience.
  • Appointee must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license only if vehicle operation is required.
Basic Functions and Responsibilities
  • Supervise the development, implementation, and maintenance of a multi‑network, multi‑user environment.
  • Maintain availability of centralized, decentralized, and remote network services.
  • Schedule and dispatch resources to troubleshoot, log, and correct network issues via help desk or monitoring.
  • Plan and install software updates and patches.
  • Plan and install hardware upgrades for servers, gateways, and telecom devices.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for network hardware and software.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain networked devices (printers, PCs, fax, modems, etc.).
  • Configure and troubleshoot client software installations.
  • Provide guidance to infrastructure managers to troubleshoot network problems.
  • Administer user access and manage user accounts on file/print and dial‑in servers.
  • Administer electronic mail gateways.
  • Diagnose and repair or coordinate repair of network hardware.
  • Monitor performance of servers and telecom devices, tuning and optimizing as needed.
  • Monitor disk capacity and ensure adequate space for users and applications.
  • Respond to error logs and document corrective actions.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce system standards and procedures.
  • Maintain network security and data integrity, including antivirus countermeasures.
  • Develop, test, implement, and periodically update a disaster recovery plan.
  • Ensure daily, weekly, incremental, or full backups are performed, verified, and rotated off‑site.
  • Assist clients in restoring files from backup.
  • Provide technical support to end users.
  • Stay current with emerging network technologies and evaluate vendor products.
  • Coordinate with OTIS and other agencies to optimize network topology and wiring infrastructure.
  • Lead capacity planning to ensure timely, cost‑effective network advancement.
  • Prepare an annual budget for network hardware, software, and telecom components.
  • Learn to utilize various electronic record and information systems used by the district.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge and Abilities
    • Knowledge of industry‑standard NOS, server hardware, telecom components, security countermeasures, and capacity techniques.
    • Ability to set goals, prioritize, schedule, troubleshoot, communicate, report, advise, work independently, and maintain records.
    • Effective communication in English; ASL or Braille may be accepted.
    • Eligibility for persons with disabilities as specified by law.
