Position: Network Administrator 1 (NBOE)

Network Administrator I

Division of Information Technology – The position is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; candidates will be placed as provisional employees, subject to mandatory examination.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise development, implementation, and maintenance of multi‑network multi‑user environment.
  • Maintain availability of centralized, decentralized, and remote network services such as file service, printing, local and Internet e‑mail, office applications, remote access, web connectivity, and mainframe gateway.
  • Schedule and dispatch resources to track, troubleshoot, and correct network‑related issues logged through the help desk or network monitoring.
  • Plan and install software updates, patches, and hardware upgrades for network servers, gateways, and telecommunication devices.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date documentation for network hardware and software.
  • Configure and troubleshoot networked devices and client software installations.
  • Administer user access to network resources and modify user accounts on file/print and dial‑in servers.
  • Administer electronic mail gateways internally and to the Internet.
  • Diagnose, repair, or coordinate repair of network hardware.
  • Monitor performance of servers, hubs, switches, routers, and optimize for throughput and downtime.
  • Manage disk capacity and ensure adequate space for users and applications.
  • Respond to logged errors, document high‑severity incidents, and track corrective actions.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce system standards and procedures.
  • Ensure network security and data integrity, including anti‑virus measures.
  • Develop, test, and update disaster‑recovery plans and perform regular backups.
  • Provide technical support to end users.
  • Stay current on emerging network technologies and evaluate vendor products.
  • Coordinate with OTIS and other agencies on network topology and infrastructure.
  • Lead capacity planning and prepare annual budgets for network equipment and services.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in multi‑network LAN, MAN, and/or WAN environments, or an equivalent combination of 30 semester‑hour credits of related education and experience.
  • For positions involving Storage Area Network administration: at least three (3) years of experience installing, configuring, and supporting network hardware and software, including one year of SAN experience.
  • Or possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with at least 18 semester‑hour credits in mathematics, computer science, information technology, or related fields, plus the required professional experience.
  • Formal training in Computer Science or Information Technology from an accredited institution may be accepted with appropriate documentation.
  • Valid New Jersey driver’s license required only if vehicle operation is essential.
  • Knowledge of industry standard Network Operating Systems, server hardware, telecommunication components, security countermeasures, and capacity planning techniques.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills; ability to work independently or in a team; proficiency in English.
  • Eligibility for accommodations for individuals with mental or physical disabilities, per ADA.
Reporting Structure

Reports to Department Head.

Compensation and Employment
  • Salary Range: $78,099 – $95,406.
  • Employment Period:
    Twelve (12) months.
  • Union Affiliation:
    Local 32.
