Court Interpreter - Spanish - Operations Division

The Court Interpreter for the Essex Vicinage, under the Operations Division Manager (Court Executive 2b), will provide interpretation in sight, consecutive, and simultaneous modes for court and virtual proceedings, quasi‑judicial hearings, dispute resolution events, weddings, and other court‑related events. The interpreter will also translate documents, including official forms, public signs, notices, posters, letter forms, and correspondence.

Example of Duties
  • Provide in‑person, telephonic or video interpreting services for court proceedings, quasi‑judicial hearings, complementary dispute resolution events, and other court‑related events.
  • Interpret from spoken English into Spanish and reverse, in sight, consecutive, or simultaneous mode.
  • Assist with setting up and testing devices for virtual events to provide simultaneous interpreting.
  • Deliver interpreting services individually or as part of a team of two or more interpreters.
  • Produce final or draft translations into English or Spanish of documents such as official forms, public signs, notices, posters, and correspondence.
  • Provide cross‑training to co‑workers and shadowing opportunities for interns.
  • Recommend improvements in operating procedures, programs, and administrative practices.
Qualifications
  • Eligibility:
    Applicants must be court interpreters approved by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), having passed the written and performance oral exams of the National Center for State Courts or an equivalent test, or holding the Court Interpreter Certification from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.
  • Prior to translating documents, incumbents must pass the translation test administered by the AOC.

Supplemental Information
  • Physical Ability:
    Must be able to perform work requiring climbing, prolonged standing, stretching, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying supplies weighing 30 to 50 lbs, and occasionally up to 75 lbs.
  • Driver’s License:
    Required only if vehicle operation is essential to the duties.
  • Authorization to Work: U.S. citizenship is not required; candidate must be authorized to work in the U.S. under DHS and USCIS regulations.
