Project Assistant

Description We are looking for a Project Assistant to support onsite interpreting services within a higher education setting in Newark, New Jersey. This Long-term Contract opportunity is part-time and aligned to assigned class schedules, helping ensure students have clear access to instruction and classroom participation through skilled interpretation. The role calls for a dependable, detail-oriented individual who can navigate academic environments with discretion, accuracy, and strong communication skills.

Responsibilities:

- Deliver onsite interpretation during scheduled college classes to support access to spoken instruction and classroom dialogue.

- Translate communication accurately between American Sign Language and spoken English for students, faculty, and other campus participants during assigned sessions.

- Convey the intended meaning, tone, and context of lectures, discussions, and questions while preserving clarity for all parties involved.

- Review available course materials in advance and prepare for subject-specific terminology to improve interpretation quality.

- Coordinate effectively around class schedules and communicate early about availability, coverage needs, or potential conflicts.

- Maintain attentive conduct, confidentiality, and impartiality while working in classroom and university settings.

- Provide reliable attendance and punctual support for each assigned class to ensure continuity of service. Requirements - Fluency in American Sign Language and spoken English with the ability to interpret effectively in both directions.

- Prior experience providing interpretation support in academic or instructional settings.

- Strong expressive and receptive communication skills with the ability to adapt to varied speakers and subject matter.

- Dependable work habits, including punctuality, professionalism, and consistent follow-through on scheduled assignments.

- Comfort working onsite in a college classroom environment and interacting with students, instructors, and staff.

- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain neutrality during interpreted communication.

- Familiarity with academic terminology or previous higher education interpreting experience is preferred.

- Relevant interpreting credentials or certifications are considered an advantage. Talent Match®
