A. Spencer School, Newark Vocational High School, Park Elementary School, Science Park High School, University High School, West Side High School.

Title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. Candidates will be placed as provisional employees and later require a civil service examination.

Definition

Under direction, supervises and works with custodial personnel engaging in cleaning and maintenance of school building and grounds; does other related duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
  • Two (2) years of experience in heating, inspection, cleaning and maintenance of furniture, fixtures, offices, buildings, and grounds; one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of the appropriate type issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
  • Valid New Jersey driver’s license if operation of a vehicle is necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Inspect, analyze, and determine cleaning work and material needs.
  • Establish, maintain, and develop work plans for subordinates.
  • Supervise and lead cleaning, maintenance, and care of buildings, grounds, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Supervise sweeping, washing, sanding, waxing, painting, and reconditioning of floors and furniture.
  • Operate heating and ventilating equipment; may supervise elevator operator duties.
  • Make inspections of buildings and grounds; ensure necessary work is performed.
  • Obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and supervise use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Maintain personnel, equipment, materials, supplies, work done, and time records.
  • Report necessary repairs to authorities.
  • Maintain order among children in building and grounds.
  • Learn to use electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency.
  • Perform other duties assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of problems, procedures, and operations in inspecting, analyzing, and planning building and ground maintenance and heating and ventilating work.
  • Knowledge of methods for establishing and maintaining work procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods for obtaining, storing, safeguarding, distributing, and supervising equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Knowledge of establishing and maintaining records of personnel, equipment, materials, supplies, work done, time spent, and cost.
  • Ability to analyze building, heating, and ground maintenance problems.
  • Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective methods.
  • Ability to give assignments and instructions.
  • Ability to associate with children and school staff.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently.
  • American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable communication forms.
