Position: School Physician - 4 Hours (NBOE)

School Physician 4 Hours

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of School Physician 4 Hours within the Office of Health Services. This title is a Civil Service title that is governed by New Jersey Administrative Code 4A and the Civil Service Commission. This is an unclassified title under statute NJSA 11A: 3.4l and during this time the successful candidate is considered "at will".

Under direction of the Newark Board of Education Supervising Physician, the incumbent in this part-time position is responsible for the review and analysis of absences/returns to school for students due to medical conditions. The incumbent will also be responsible for coordinating, collaborating, and consulting with the school nurse to provide physicals including, but not limited to, new students entering the district, sports physicals, and physicals for working papers.

The incumbent will act as a member of the safety committee and, after a tour of the building, recommend any safety and sanitation alterations as may be necessary. The incumbent will advise concerning student immunizations and necessary medical exemptions. The incumbent will advise and support the school nurse concerning communicable diseases, possible interventions, parental notification and the follow-up required. The incumbent will assist with the determination concerning student exemptions from physical education.

Collaborative support will be provided in the determination of 504 Accommodations and interventions for students with specific medical diagnoses. The incumbent will provide direct support to the school nurse in obtaining appropriate medical orders for students requiring specific orders for medical treatments or care. Such determinations will be based on research and consultation with the supervising physician and the primary health care providers for our students.

Qualifications and requirements include graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Medicine, possession of the legal credentials, including a license, for the practice of medicine in the State of New Jersey as determined by the New Jersey State Medical Board of Examiners, thorough knowledge of the practice of general medicine, the latest medical techniques used in the examination and treatment of patients, the most effective diagnostic techniques, and proper medical measures.

Five (5) years of successful experience in the State of New Jersey as a licensed practicing physician is also required. A driver's license, valid in New Jersey, is required if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Basic functions and responsibilities include reviewing and approving/denying medical absences for students as needed and consulting with the school nurse and appropriate school staff. The incumbent must be available for conferences, meetings where it is determined that the presence of a medical individual is necessary. They will conduct orientations and in-service training sessions when necessary, maintain or oversee the maintenance of student record-keeping operations, and participate in the coordination of joint investigative efforts with other agencies in cases of mutual interest of the students.

They will also plan and organize work processes related to reviewing and analyzing student health issues, coordinate the provision of student physical examinations for new enrollees, sports participation and working papers, review medical and medication orders for students and advise the school nurse as needed and consult with the student's physician as necessary, and perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge and abilities include knowledge of pharmacology and psychopharmacology, wide knowledge of New Jersey law and the local health department regarding prevention and control of communicable and contagious diseases, familiarity with New Jersey state statutes, administrative codes, rules, regulations, professional rules of conduct, and District policies, knowledge of the rules, regulations, and policies of the New Jersey Department of Education/ Newark Board…
