Director Patient Care – Registered Nurse (RN), Pediatrics

Location: Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, 201 Lyons Avenue, Newark, NJ 07112‑2027.
Department: Pediatrics Unit.
Pay Range: $ – $ per year.
Shift: Day.
Statust: Full‑Time, Exempt (salaried).

Job Overview

The Director of Patient Care is responsible for assisting the Patient Care Service Executive Council in defining, planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the philosophy and objectives for their designated areas to ensure the optimal delivery of care and services to all patients in an environment that promotes professional development and continues to assure financial viability. The primary goal is the delivery of competent, efficient and cost‑effective care.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited NLN School of Nursing.
  • BSN degree.
  • Minimum four years nursing leadership experience.
  • Minimum three years pediatric experience in an acute care setting.

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree.
Certifications and Licenses
  • Current and active NJ RN licensure required.
  • BLS Certification.
Scheduling Requirements
  • Full-Time 37.5 hours per week.
  • Exempt (salaried) position (weekends and on‑call required).
  • Honor system.
  • Days.
Essential Functions

Leadership:

  • Facilitate interdisciplinary communication/collaboration with all members of the health care team, patient, and family by participating with unit level staff, medical staff, and department managers to promote coordination of services.
  • Collaborate with Education Specialist / APN to meet educational needs of the unit staff.
  • Act as a liaison between family, patient, physician and staff.
  • Plan and promote leadership succession.
  • Balance professional and personal pursuits.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of patient relation activities, including hourly rounding.

Standards and Regulatory Readiness:

  • Monitor the implementation of the plan of care with clinical outcomes.
  • Maintain adherence to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center policies and procedures.
  • Maintain regulatory readiness; utilize performance improvement process to improve the quality of patient care; participate in nursing policy formulation and decision making.

Support of Healthcare Environment:

  • Ensure effective, appropriate utilization of human, fiscal, and material resources by assuring appropriate utilization of staff based on staff competencies, job responsibilities, and patient needs.
  • Develop monthly time schedule, allocating resources efficiently, provide balanced staff distribution on duty for all shifts throughout the year with input into the schedule.
  • Monitor unit's budget and control variances.
  • Monitor LOS with open communication with all the health care disciplines.

Support of Professional Practice:

  • Enhance the clinical environment for retention of qualified staff.
  • Recruit and select personnel for hire.
  • Ensure appropriate orientation, training and continuing education for personnel.
  • Evaluate, and counsel/disciplines staff on their job performance.
  • Complete performance evaluations in required time frame.
  • Demonstrate principles of self‑care and support members of the health care team in self‑care practices.
  • Align organizational conduct with ethical and professional standards.
