Registered Nurse (RN) Outpatient Infusion – RWJBarnabas Health

The Oncology Infusion Registered Nurse provides safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to adult oncology and hematology patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, hydration, injections, and other infusion treatments. The RN assesses patients before, during, and after treatment; promptly identifies changes in condition; educates patients and families; and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate high-quality care.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:

  • Conducting comprehensive patient assessments and recognize subtle clinical changes, using your judgment to intervene early and advocate for your patients
  • Providing safe, evidence-based medications, treatments, and hands on care grounded in strong clinical judgment
  • Serving as a clinical partner to physicians and advanced providers, offering insight that supports timely, well-coordinated care decisions
  • Providing clear, compassionate education to patients and families so they feel informed, supported, and prepared for the next phase of care
  • Ensuring accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record to promote continuity and patient safety
  • Contributing your voice during interdisciplinary rounds, helping drive seamless communication and smooth transitions of care
  • Taking an active role in a highly collaborative team environment where shared accountability and teamwork directly impact outcomes
  • Pursuing continued professional growth through access to continuing education, clinical ladder opportunities, and organizational resources that support long term career progression
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments before, during, and after infusion treatments
  • Verify treatment plans, provider orders, laboratory results, medication dosages, treatment parameters, allergies, and required authorizations before administering therapy
  • Safely administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, blood products, hydration, injections, and supportive medications according to organizational policies and accepted oncology standards
  • Independently perform double-checks and follow all medication-safety procedures
  • Access, assess, maintain, and de-access implanted ports and other central venous access devices
  • Initiate and manage peripheral intravenous lines as appropriate
  • Monitor patients for infusion reactions, medication side effects, hypersensitivity reactions, and changes in clinical condition
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to oncologic emergencies and infusion-related complications
  • Provide symptom-management guidance related to pain, nausea, fatigue, dehydration, infection risk, and treatment side effects
  • Educate patients and caregivers about treatment plans, medications, possible side effects, infection precautions, and when to contact the healthcare team
  • Provide emotional support and promote a compassionate, patient-centered experience,
