Overview: The Department of Biological Sciences is a teaching and research department that offers multiple educational, research and outreach programs in alignment with core guiding principles of Rutgers University - Newark. Important to the department mission is its contribution to education that supports and guides a large robust population of undergraduate students preparing for careers in healthcare professions as well as academic and private sector biomedical fields.
Additionally, the department offers Ph.D. and MS graduate programs that provide advanced scholarly and research training in Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology.

- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician. The Senior Laboratory Technician performs professional-level laboratory technical and instructional support duties involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques supporting teaching laboratories and courses.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:
- Prepares tissues, chemicals, preserved and/or live specimens and bacterial cultures for testing; and prepares laboratory preparation manuals
- Maintains equipment, supplies, chemical inventories, and facilities for assigned laboratories
- Meets regularly with course instructors to review technical information for laboratory exercises
- Adjusts, calibrates, repairs laboratory equipment and ensures equipment is in appropriate condition and maintained in a clean, safe manner in accordance with established procedures
- Instructs and/or trains Teaching Assistants in the proper use of all laboratory equipment and on all relevant safety procedures and other applicable regulations

QualificationsMinimum
Education and Experience:
- Requires a bachelors degree in a scientific discipline.
- A combination of two years college-level science curriculum plus two years relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests may be substituted for the degree.
- An additional equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience in the above combination.
- Requires knowledge of scientific empirical procedures.
- Must understand the fundamentals of the science; read and understand technical documents; perform basic scientific routines, protocols, and tests; articulate data to researchers; lift and move up to 30 pounds; and operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
- Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
- May require a valid drivers license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
- Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
