Primary PurposeThe Safety Specialist is responsible for managing field compliance processes and delivering safety training across USS locations. This role ensures adherence to safety regulations, leads safety‑focused meetings, and engages in proactive safety management to maintain a hazard‑free workplace. The position requires extensive fieldwork and effective communication skills to translate company and client safety directives into actionable field practices.
Essential Functions- Field Compliance and Safety Training: Lead safety stand‑downs and huddle meetings, conduct behavior‑based safety observations, develop and deliver toolbox trainings, and prepare flash reports.
- Incident and Hazard Management: Perform incident investigations, conduct job safety analyses, assess accident data, and identify safety risks for improvement.
- Client and Regulatory Compliance: Interpret and implement client safety requirements, ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations such as DOT, OSHA, and EPA, and serve as a resource on compliance rules.
- Documentation and Reporting: Prepare and maintain reports on safety observations, incident investigations, and compliance audits, track effectiveness, and maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Defensive Driving and Certification Support: Serve as a certified defensive driving instructor, provide training, maintain OSHA 501/502 certifications, and deliver compliance training based on company guidelines.
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications- Education: 4‑year/bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Project Management, Governance, Risk, and Compliance or related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 4 years in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) compliance, preferably within field operations or transportation environments.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Proficient in DOT, OSHA, EPA standards.
- Communication and Training: Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills for conveying safety concepts.
- Problem Solving and Analysis: Strong analytical skills to assess safety risks, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiarity with incident tracking systems.
