Overview
Position Details for HVAC R Mechanic II within the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Responsible for maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
Responsibilities- Operates, maintains, repairs, and installs HVAC/R equipment and controls ancillary equipment (controls, regulators, motors, compressors, air stations, coils, fluid/gas piping, strainers, operating valves, dampers).
- Responds to HVAC/R trouble calls and requests using hand tools, power tools, analyzing equipment and testing instruments.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance and inspections on HVAC/R equipment and related systems.
- Prepares requisitions for material, work orders, records, and reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance and Construction.
- Maintains daily time sheets and records of work performed.
- Interprets data from the Power Plant, mechanical systems, control systems, and energy management shift logs; reports necessary actions to the Supervisor.
- Prepares or works from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with HVAC/R standards.
- Analyzes situations requiring modification or repair of facility equipment and makes recommendations.
- Services all refrigerant equipment and high‑pressure appliances per EPA 40 CFR.
- Assists in directing other mechanics, trades helpers, and other skilled trade mechanics.
- Adheres to Rutgers compliance standards, including the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy.
- Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state, and Rutgers regulations, laws, and policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Technical school diploma or equivalent plus 3 years experience in operation, maintenance, and installation of HVAC/R equipment in industrial, education, or health‑care settings.
- Valid driver’s license.
- EPA Type II, CPA 82, Subpart F, 40 CFR certification.
- Ability to pass and maintain New Jersey Pesticide License Testing Requirement.
- Sound knowledge of blueprint and schematic reading and thorough knowledge of local, state, and national codes.

Physical Demands and Work Environment- Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, including lifting equipment > 50 lb, working on roofs, scaffolds, and ladders.
- Shift: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday‑Friday.

Range: $31,310 – $32,760 per year.
