DefinitionUnder a supervisory officer, performs general carpentry work involved in the layout, construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings and of household, office, and institution equipment and furnishings; performs other related duties.

Qualifications and Requirements- Three (3) years of experience in carpentry work involving the layout, construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings and office equipment and furnishings.
- Requires a valid New Jersey driver’s license if vehicle operation is needed for the essential duties.
- May require a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and appropriate endorsements for the vehicle being operated.
- Repair broken and malfunctioning furniture, doors, window cords and sashes, Venetian blinds, screens, locks, glass panes, and other equipment; make and install window frames and sashes, screens, trim, doors, flooring, siding, sheathing, stairs, railing porches, cabinets, and simple furniture.
- Construct and repair buildings and structures using appropriate wood joints such as dovetail, miter, mortise, and tenon.
- Replace damaged ceiling panels, wall coverings, or floor segments such as inlaid parquet pieces.
- Build bookcases, cabinets, tables, fan brackets, stands, screens, partitions, and other equipment.
- Create various rafter cuts; lay out and cut stair horse stringers; erect scaffolding; construct and install cribbing and formwork for concrete; set and operate woodworking machines including power saws, planers, jointers, sanders, drills, and routers.
- Perform emergency carpentry repairs.
- Instruct inmates and/or patients in carpentry work, ensuring safety, custody, and work progress.
- Build and repair special truck bodies.
- Prepare time and materials estimates.
- Report on personnel, time, supplies, and work completed.
- Maintain records.
- In the Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo fire‑training classes.
- May need to use electronic or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Knowledge of methods and problems involved in inspecting, repairing, constructing and maintaining buildings, furniture, ventilators, window cords, sashes, screens, locks, and other equipment.
- Ability to analyze carpentry work, organize work, and develop work methods.
- Ability to follow directions and/or work from blueprints or drawings.
- Ability to make carpentry repairs and perform carpentry construction work.
- Ability to use standard carpentry tools and equipment efficiently and safely, including planers, jointers, band saws, crosscut saws, shapers, and specialized machinery.
- Ability to requisition, store, safeguard, and use carpentry equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to take safety precautions.
- Ability to prepare reports of equipment and materials used, time spent, and work completed.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Ability to use electronic or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English;
American Sign Language or Braille may also be acceptable.
