The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Electrician
- Night within the Office of Facilities Management – Project Control. (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval.)
This position is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; the successful candidate will be placed as a provisional employee and will later be required to take a Civil Service Commission examination. Candidates must score and rank high enough on the examination to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DefinitionUnder direction, performs varied tasks involved in the installation, inspection, repair, servicing, and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits; also performs related work as required.
Qualifications and Requirements- High School diploma, vocational school graduation, or an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
- Three (3) years of experience in installing, inspecting, repairing, servicing, and maintaining electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits.
- Applicants lacking the required experience may substitute a current valid Electrical Contractor License issued by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
- Appointees may be required to pass a color‑blindness test.
- Appointees may be required to hold a valid New Jersey driver’s license if vehicle operation is necessary.
- Appointees may be required to possess a current, valid Electrical Contractor license issued by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
- Inspect electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, motors, generators, pumps, power circuits, and machine/elevator controllers to determine needed repairs or replacements; perform necessary repair and installation work.
- Install, maintain, inspect, repair, and service high‑ and low‑tension power and light feeders, generating and control equipment, relays, transformers, motors, pumps, switches, outlets, signal systems, and other electrical wiring, cables, fixtures, and appliances.
- Oil, grease, and maintain electrical fixtures, appliances, and equipment, replacing worn parts.
- Use test equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters, and ohmmeters.
- Make emergency electrical repairs, troubleshoot malfunctions and breakdowns, and inspect work in progress and completed work for defects, fire hazards, or other unsafe conditions.
- Work from electrical schematics, plans, and specifications in accordance with established procedures.
- Requisition, store, safeguard, and properly use electrical equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Prepare clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Maintain essential records and files.
- Learn to utilize various electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Knowledge of equipment and techniques involved in installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining cables, wiring, motors, generators, pumps, refrigerators, radios, sound equipment, switchboards, oil machinery, and circuits.
- Knowledge of challenges generally encountered in performance of electrical work.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and diagrams.
- Ability to analyze problems involving electrical installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair work and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to install, inspect, repair, and maintain cables, wiring, motors, generators, pumps, refrigerators, radios, sound equipment, oil burners, and other electrical equipment, appliances, fixtures, machinery, and circuits under varying circumstances.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to order, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
