Position: Per Diem Sheet Metal Worker SY 2026-27 (NBOE)

PER DIEM SHEET METAL WORKER

Office of Facilities Management (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval). The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for this position.

Definition

Under direction, performs all general sheet metal work involved in the layout, construction, maintenance, and erection of sheet metal structures and equipment; works with various machine and hand tools common to the sheet metal trade; may prepare or work from sketches, blueprints, and specifications in accordance with accepted trade practices; takes the lead over and gives suitable assignments to those assigned as helpers;

does related work as required.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or vocational school, or possession of an approved high school equivalent certificate.
  • Three years of experience in work involving the construction, repair, and maintenance of sheet metal fixtures, fittings, and appliances.
  • Applicants will be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Basic Functions and Responsibilities
  • Fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal products and equipment such as control boxes, drainpipes, ventilators, and furnace casings according to job order or blueprints.
  • Select gauge and type of sheet metal according to product being fabricated and knowledge of metal.
  • Locates and marks dimensions and reference lines on metal sheet.
  • Sets up and operates fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, bending rolls, and punch and drill presses to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal.
  • Shapes metal over anvils, blocks, or forms using a hammer.
  • Sets up and operates soldering and welding equipment to join sheet metal parts.
  • Smooths seams, joints, or burrred surfaces using files and a portable grinder or buffer.
  • Installs assemblies at plant or worksite according to blueprint specifications using hand tools and portable power tools.
  • Inspects assemblies and installations for conformance with specifications using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers.
  • Installs, repairs, and/or makes ducts, gutters, downspouts, copper leaders, ventilators, roofing, flashing, chain guards, clamps, hoods, drains, containers, and other sheet metal products.
  • Develops patterns for various sheet metal objects using the parallel line, radial line, or triangulation methods.
  • Joins pieces using various fastening methods such as welded, "C" sunk, lap riveted, standing riveted, grooved double, and various types of circular seams.
  • Constructs double hem, square and standing hem edges, beads, and notches; welds, brazes, and sells joints.
  • Uses electric and hand shears, folding brakes, hardies, files, center punches, pneumatic hammers, swages, dollies, stakes, folders, edgers, and trammels.
  • Erects and works from ladders and scaffolding.
  • Prepares and/or works from sketches, blueprints, and specifications in accordance with accepted trade practices.
  • Makes time and materials estimates.
  • Inspects work in progress and completed work.
  • Gives suitable assignments to helpers and keeps needed records; performs soldering, riveting, straightening, and other repair work to fix leaky and malfunctioning pots, steamers, cans, pails, coffee, tea, and hot water runs, aluminum dishes, galvanized sinks, tray and guard rails, bread and food trucks, and other kitchen and dairy equipment.
  • Constructs, repairs, and maintains ventilators and air ducts.
  • Constructs tin roofs and performs soldering and shaping work.
  • Repairs slate roofs, including flashing, papering, cutting, and punching prior to slate installation.
  • In instructing inmates and/or patients in sheet metal work as applicable under the State Department of Human Services, ensuring their safety, custody, welfare, and work progress.
