Per Diem Painter (Night)

Office of Facilities Management - Project Control

(Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)

Definition

Under direction of a Crew Supervisor, applies paint and other coating materials to various surfaces from ground level and/or scaffolds, platforms, and ladders at various heights, using brushes, rollers, and spray guns; follows accepted methods and uses proper materials and tools to prepare surfaces for painting; cleans standard painting tools; performs related work as required.

Additional Tasks

Some jurisdictions may occasionally require painters to measure, cut, and install panes of glass to replace broken windows or hang wallpaper; these tasks are related but not normally required.

Applicants without prior experience may be considered if they have a successful completion of an apprentice painting program approved by the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Three (3) years of experience in interior and exterior building painting and repainting.
  • Valid New Jersey driver’s license only if a vehicle is required for the essential duties.
Basic Functions and Responsibilities
  • May work alone or as a member of a team on indoor and outdoor assignments.
  • Prepares surfaces using sandpaper, wire brushes, or steel wool; removes loose paint with paint remover or wire brushes.
  • Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, spackle, or other fillers.
  • Prepares or mixes paint to match specified colors.
  • Thins, stirs, and mixes paint for proper consistency.
  • Applies paint or coating materials with brushes, rollers, and spray guns to meet surface protection requirements.
  • Applies varnish, stain, shellac, lacquer, or enamel to refinish cabinets, desks, chairs, doors, or trim.
  • Paints cramped and hard‑to‑reach areas from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms.
  • Erects scaffolding including prefabricated metal, wooden, or swing stages; "A" ladders, window jacks, or ladder jacks, following standard methods.
  • Receives work orders from supervisory personnel via written or verbal instruction.
  • Cleans and cares for brushes, rollers, and other equipment with water, turpentine, paint thinner, or other cleaning materials.
  • May act as Team Leader and assign duties to inmates/residents in the Department of Corrections and the Juvenile Justice Commission.
  • Uses various electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency or related units.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of surface preparation procedures for painting.
  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of staining, vanishing, and refinishing cabinet and woodwork.
  • Knowledge of thinning, mixing, and matching paint.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and caring for painting tools.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal or written orders.
  • Ability to fill holes and cracks with putty or spackle.
  • Ability to work from various elevations.
  • Ability to rig scaffolding at various heights.
  • Ability to use brush, roller, or spray application methods.
  • Ability to employ electronic and/or manual recording systems.
  • Ability to read, write, speak English, and optionally use American Sign Language or Braille.
