Sheet Metal Worker
The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the Sheet Metal Worker position. Under direction, performs all general sheet metal work involved in the layout, construction, maintenance, and erection of sheet metal structures and equipment; works with various machine and hand tools common to the sheet metal trade; may prepare or work from sketches, blueprints, and specifications in accordance with accepted trade practices;
takes the lead over and gives suitable assignments to those assigned as helpers; does related work as required.
Qualifications and requirements include graduation from high school or vocational school or possession of an approved high school equivalent certificate, three years of experience in work involving the construction, repair, and maintenance of sheet metal fixtures, fittings, and appliances, and a driver's license valid in New Jersey if necessary for the position.
Basic functions and responsibilities include fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing sheet metal products and equipment, selecting gauge and type of sheet metal, setting up and operating fabricating machines, shaping metal over anvils, blocks, or forms, using hammer, setting up and operating soldering and welding equipment, smoothing seams, joints, or burred surfaces, installing assemblies in plant or worksite according to blueprint specifications, inspecting assembles and installation for conformance with specifications, installing, repairing, and/or making ducts, gutters, downspouts, copper leaders, ventilators, roofing, flashing, chain guards, clamps, hoods, drains, containers, and other sheet metal products, using parallel line, radial line or triangulation methods, developing patterns for various sheet metal objects, joining pieces using various methods of fastening, constructing double hem, square and standing hem edges, beads and notches sheet metal, erecting and working from ladders and scaffolding, preparing and/or working from sketches, blueprints, and specifications in accordance with accepted trade practices, making time and materials estimates, inspecting work in progress and completed work, giving suitable assignments to helpers, and keeping needed records.
Knowledge and abilities include wide knowledge of the problems involved in inspecting, repairing, constructing, and maintaining copper leaders and gutters, tin roofs and gutters and slate and other roofs, including the operations of flashing, papering, cutting, and punching prior to the installation of slate and other types of roofing work, wide knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of ventilators and air ducts, ability to analyze problems involving sheet metal work, organize assigned construction and repair work and develop effective work methods, ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions and assignments, ability to inspect, repair, construct, and maintain copper leaders and gutters, tin leaders and gutters, and repair slate roofs, ability to inspect and repair kitchen, dairy, and other equipment, ability to construct, maintain, and repair ventilators and air ducts, and install strip shingles and other weatherproofing materials on the roofs of buildings, ability to requisition, store, safeguard and properly use needed equipment, materials and supplies, ability to keep simple records of equipment, materials, supplies, work done and time spent, ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units, ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position, and ability to perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations.
