Position: Laborer 1 (NBOE)

ROGER LEÓN, SUPERINTENDENT

Office of Facilities Management Project Control (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Laborer 1 within the Office of Facilities Management Project Control.

This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; a candidate will be placed as a provisional employee and must complete a 90‑Day Working Test period. Successful completion of the probation period is required to become a permanent employee.

Definition

Under direction of a supervisory official, performs varied types of manual and unskilled laboring work and may drive a truck in connection with laboring work on occasion; does other related duties as required.

Qualifications And Requirements
  • Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license in New Jersey if operating a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and applicable endorsements may be required for certain vehicles.

NOTE:

The responsibility for ensuring employees possess the required motor vehicle license rests with the appointing authority.

Basic Functions And Responsibilities
  • Loads, lifts, and moves supplies, furniture, and equipment.
  • Digs trenches and grades manually.
  • Cleans incinerators, rubbish, refuse, and sewers.
  • Maintains outdoor spaces: cleans, cuts grass, trims hedges, sweeps streets, and waters lawns, flowers, and vegetable beds.
  • Loads and unloads trucks; shovels snow, gravel, and sand.
  • Whitewashes walls, mixes cement and mortar, and places forms for concrete work.
  • Performs cold patching, cleans up underbrush, foliage, vines, weed, and clears poisonous vines and undergrowth.
  • Operates construction/maintenance equipment, including pneumatic drills, street and road equipment, and asphalt pavement repair tools (e.g., rakes, tampers, heating kettles).
  • Assists in repairing and maintaining zoo displays and structures, including routine painting and handling animals as required.
  • May learn to operate construction and maintenance machinery and perform routine repairs to valves, fittings, pipes, or equipment.
  • Recalls accurate records using electronic or manual recording and information systems.
Knowledge And Abilities
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and supplies for manual and unskilled tasks.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks alone or as part of a team.
  • Ability to work heavy manual labor for extended periods under varying temperatures and climatic conditions.
  • Ability to follow prescribed instructions and safety precautions when operating tools and equipment.
  • Ability to learn and use required tools and recording systems.
  • Strong English reading, writing, understanding, and communication skills;
    American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered acceptable forms of communication.
