Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC)

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC). The position is with the Office of Student Support Services, pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid New Jersey standard certificate as school social worker or school counselor.
  • Valid New Jersey Student Assistance Coordinator Certification.
  • Valid Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor credential issued by the New Jersey Alcohol and Drug Counselor Committee of the Marriage and Family Board.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in a school.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with at risk students.
  • Knowledge of behavioral modifications and intervention strategies which will improve student behavior and motivate disaffected students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substance abuse curriculum development, counseling and staff development.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Direct Assistance to Students and Parents:
    Assesses students' drug/alcohol involvement and makes appropriate referral to treatment facilities when necessary. Works in cooperation with treatment facility, counselors, parents, school personnel and students in developing and following through with the students' aftercare plan. Facilitates conferences with parents or child's guardian to review, discuss and/or implement appropriate steps and stages of intervention plan and options. Provides short-term counseling or group counseling for students with substance abuse problems or concerns.

    Implements and coordinates parent education programs related to substance awareness.
  • Administrative Duties:
    Assists in the coordination of supplemental programs and guest speakers. Assists in the research and review of instructional materials for possible purchase and use. Develops and coordinates a referral system and intervention services for early identification of students who are at-risk for substance abuse or demonstrating symptoms of substance use and abuse, coordinates a referral system with local, state and other services, providers or agencies.

    Assesses the district's prevention/intervention program on an annual basis and makes recommendations. Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education activities and other professional growth activities. Maintains a continuing review of statutes and codes related to drug and alcohol programming. Assists with the development and annual review of policies and procedures regarding substance abuse, use and chemical health education, and recommends changes to administration.
  • Interaction with Other Staff and with Community Groups:
    Works in cooperation with resources available within the school district (i.e. child study team, school counselors, school social worker, nurses, etc.). Assists in the design, implementation and coordination of staff development related to substance awareness. Provides in-service education for all teachers and staff responsible for the delivery of chemical health education. Serves as a resource to district personnel on substance awareness/abuse issues as well as on the availability of training programs.

    Provides training for all school staff in intervention and referral procedures. Participates in the community-based Municipal Alliance to facilitate the liaison between school and community. Provides coordination of school-based prevention programs with community-based prevention programs. Develops community awareness through active participation as a school liaison to appropriate community groups and organizations.

Other Responsibilities:

Crisis intervention and participates in student support team and intervention and referral service meetings. Performs other duties which may be within the scope of his/her employment and certification as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services.

Salary:
The salary range for this position is $58,500 to $103,900. Employment Period: 10 Month Calendar Union Affiliation:
