Operations Manager
Overview
The Newark Site Lead directs and controls all aspects of the Newark Engineering Plastics (EP) Facility for the North American Region, including production of compounded Makrolon, Bayblend, Makroblend, and Apec resins. The role is accountable for departments such as Manufacturing, HSEQ, Reliability, Quality Assurance, Color Development, Process and Product Development, Human Resources, Procurement, Utilities, Warehousing/Logistics, site security, and Controlling. The Site Lead ensures compliance with corporate policies and government regulations and represents Covestro to the public, local organizations, and government entities.
Responsibilities- Provide leadership to ensure safe and reliable operations for production, maintenance, engineering, quality control, process improvement, product scale‑up and logistics for compounded Makrolon, Bayblend, Makroblend, and Apec resins.
- Identify, define, and realize optimizations of HSEQ performance, process efficiency, quality performance, and site costs.
- Develop and implement medium and long‑term asset and site strategy in line with NA and global EP business and operations strategy.
- Develop, design, and implement capital projects to meet North American market demand and HSEQ, legal, reliability, capability, and cost‑efficiency goals.
- Provide know‑how, resources, and quick response to customer needs in conjunction with the Color Development Center, new product developments and customer complaint responses.
- Ensure Covestro Newark operations comply with all statutes, corporate, local and group guidelines and regulations.
- Coach, develop, and ensure site personnel are competent and motivated to meet business objectives.
- Identify succession plans and develop the organization.
- Serve as a role model of “what makes us Covestro” (WMUC).
- Represent the interests of Covestro and Newark Operations to the media, government, community stakeholders and raise local manufacturing talent.
- Serve as a member of the Engineering Plastics Global Operations Team and be responsible for EP manufacturing topics in North America.
- Serve on the North American Engineering Plastics Leadership Team and Global EP communities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technical Field and at least 10 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree in Engineering or Technical Field and at least 8 years of relevant experience.
- Broad functional experience in Production, Technology, and HSE with at least 5 years managing teams, including supervisory personnel.
- Preferred:
Labor Relations experience. - In‑depth experience in plastics or polymer manufacturing industry.
- Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma Methodologies.
- Experience in Marketing, Product Management, Product and Process Development, Safety, Controlling, and Administration.
- Experience in leading and developing personnel within a large diverse group.
- Experience interacting with state and governmental authorities.
- Experience working in a global organization.
- Strong leadership qualities: target‑oriented, performance‑driven, open listener, excellent communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with external partners and senior management.
- Strong analytical, organizational, planning and project management skills.
- Stakeholder / community engagement skills.
