Summary
The Mechanical Apprenticeship Program will develop the successful candidate to be a Journeyman Maintenance Mechanic. The program generally runs for 4 years, providing on-the-job and classroom training. Each apprentice will receive periodic examinations and performance appraisals. The Maintenance Mechanic’s role is to install and repair mechanical systems, apparatus, and components of industrial machinery, ensuring continuous manufacturing support. The candidate must work safely, follow documented and common sense safety policies, and perform root‑cause analysis on breakdowns, carrying out corrective measures.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Notify supervisor immediately of any accident, near miss, or on‑the‑job injury.
- Own daily safety practices and hold teammates to high safety standards.
- Comply with safety requirements and report exceptions.
- Follow environmental compliance policies.
- Read schematics and blueprints.
- Install, maintain, diagnose, troubleshoot, and correct general mechanical problems on industrial machinery.
- Understand, troubleshoot, and tune burner systems.
- Advanced skills in pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical gears.
- Assist in developing and completing preventive maintenance and predictive maintenance programs for motors, panels, and components.
- Maintain plant records and reports.
- Test malfunctioning machinery and discuss issues with maintenance, electrical maintenance, and operations teams, leading mechanical downtime troubleshooting when appropriate.
- Calibrate machinery, balance and align fans.
- Maintain good housekeeping practices, ensuring work areas are clean after each job.
- Show initiative to complete assigned jobs.
- Assist in training other maintenance personnel.
- Work with outside contractors as instructed.
- Attend all required training.
- Comply with all plant rules.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular attendance on site and ability to rotate to varying shifts.
- Minimum qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalent, authorized to work in the United States, minimum age 18. - Experience:
2 years preferred in a related maintenance trade or occupation involving mechanical maintenance in an industrial manufacturing environment. - Additional information:
Full‑time position, 12‑hour rotating shifts, must pass a physical and drug screen, background check, and performance (hands‑on) tests administered by Owens Corning; must complete Work Keys tests (Applied Mathematics, Graphic Literacy, Applied Technology – score >= 4) and pass the Ramsay Mechanical Maintenance Trainee test (70 % pass rate). - Essential physical requirements: ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, and leg movements for several hours; climb on and off a forklift; stand for 10‑12 hours; climb and descend stairs; lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds more than 100 times per day; squat, bend at waist and knees; tolerate temperature extremes; tolerate noise; perform repetitive movements; wear required personal protective equipment.
- Additional skills: think under pressure, make safe decisions, communicate in English, read and interpret safety rules and maintenance instructions, work independently with minimal supervision, attention to detail.
