Licensed Practical Nurse – Emergency Department

PositionSummary
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician, the LPN will provide nursing care to individuals and groups, applying basic knowledge of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences. Responsibilities include assisting RNs in patient assessment and contributing information to care planning, providing direct technical nursing care, and maintaining compliance with LMHS universal job standards.

- Provide direct technical nursing care.
- Administer medications ordered by a licensed provider following completion of the 90‑hour Pharmacology Course and passing the National Exam; practice the Eight Rights of safe medication administration.
- Respond to emergency situations promptly and professionally.
- Maintain clinical competency and nursing skills through continuing education.
- Document patient information in paper and electronic medical records.
- Follow policies and procedures to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment; practice Universal Precautions.
- Enter risk management occurrences into Midas as required.
- Wear appropriate attire per policies.
- Adhere to corporate compliance policies and procedures.
- Present a positive professional appearance and attitude, demonstrating excellent guest‑relation and interpersonal skills.
- Respect patient rights and confidentiality.
- Ensure personal performance reflects LMHS mission, vision, standards of behavior, and service goals.
- Call for bed assignment and reports.
- Enter work orders in the computer system.
- Clean and maintain equipment, including EMS equipment, and know storage locations.
- Perform duties related to the decontamination shower.
- Locate LMHS/ED specific policies, procedures, and ISO business processes via the intranet.
- Operate adult and infant scales; perform an EKG and handle copies.
- Assist with procedures related to EENT, OB/GYN, and other specialties.
- Document record entries accurately and completely.
- Obtain and record patient vital signs, weights, and other data.
- Insert Foley catheter aseptically.
- Collect, label, and enter specimens promptly; ensure laboratory transport.
- Lift, transfer, and transport patients safely to inpatient beds and ancillary departments.
- Collect and document urine pregnancy tests, fecal occult blood tests, and glucometer checks with quality controls.
- Apply restraints correctly and monitor as required.
- Perform one‑to‑one monitoring on restrained or high‑risk patients when requested.
- Clean and make beds; exchange crash carts after codes; answer the phone when needed.
- Assist in improving ED efficiencies and decreasing patient length of stay.
- Read, write, and follow verbal or written instructions.
- Current LPN licensure in Ohio, maintained.
- Operate within the scope of practice for a licensed practical nurse as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
- BLS certification (mandatory).
- Complete orientation to learn LMHS policies, nursing procedures, and techniques.
