Assist students in the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, physical, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation.
QualificationsKnowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of: specific curriculum content for subject areas, state and federal laws regarding special education, child development, differing disabilities, and their impact, and the why and how of inclusive practices.
Skilled in: lesson plan development, implementation of engaging learning activities, behavior management, assessment, teaching to individual student skill levels, assisting general education teachers in making curriculum accessible, individual education plan (IEP) development, completion of special education due process forms, and student progress monitoring.
Ability to: communicate effectively orally and in writing, and collaborate and build relationships with students, parents, and staff.
Experience: Experience preferred but not required.
Education: Completion of a higher education Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in education/teaching.
Certification
Required:
A valid teaching license issued by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission with proper Special Education Endorsement. Possess or be able to obtain a HQT status commensurate with assignment.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and times as designated.
- Use data to plan a program of study that meets the interests, needs, and abilities of the students and follows established curriculum as written by the district and the state and promotes independence and achievement.
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisor.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent within the limitations of the location and resources provided by the district.
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of the students.
- Cooperate and collaborate with other members of the staff.
- Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required.
- Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules of the school and district.
- Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and maintain such records as required by law and district policy.
- Take all reasonable precautions to provide for the health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Participate in the identification (assessment) and program planning needs for children with disabilities.
- Work with school, Education Service District personnel, parents, and outside agencies in developing IEPs.
- Provide special education for identified students via direct service delivery, teacher consultation, materials adaptation, etc.
- Provide training to educational staff (teachers, specialists, assistants, etc.)
- Serve as a resource to parents of students with disabilities.
- Maintain records, reports, and documentation as required by the District.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure curriculum is accessible and all accommodations and modifications are implemented.
- Participate in the design and implementation of behavior support plans for students with IEPs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Language
Skills:
Ability to read English and comprehend complex technical language. Ability to write memoranda, correspondence, lesson plans, reports, and student achievement summaries in English. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations.
Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written or oral instructions in English. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
