general statementserves as a member of a team responsible for monitoring, operating, and maintaining either of: the city’s water treatment system (wts) including well field, treatment plant, booster station, reservoirs and springs; and/or wastewater treatment system (wwts) including remote pump stations, composter, and treatment plant. This is an entry-level position with expected progress toward, and eventual achievement of, a treatment system operator ii position.

works under the general supervision of the public works operations supervisor. Daily duty scheduling and monitoring may be performed under the direction of the appropriate plant senior operator.

essential duties and responsibilities- performs inspections of the treatment systems to ensure proper equipment operation, working conditions, safety, and cleanliness per established requirements.
- assists in monitoring, controlling, and maintaining facilities, equipment, and system processes.
- utilizes computer workstations with specialized software to log, retrieve, manipulate and interpret various types of information in differing formats.
- operates, troubleshoots, and control systems from the computer workstations using specialized software.
- participates as a member of the operations and maintenance team to assess conditions, plans and offers input.
- learns to collect samples and properly conduct elementary laboratory testing.
- learns to interpret basic laboratory data and make adjustments to meet process control target guidelines as instructed by senior staff.
- operates the solids handling portion of the plant (dewatering, composting, dehydration unit, and loading compost customers).
- complies with rules and regulatory guidelines specific to the operation of the plants established by the city of newberg, or-osha, epa, deq and the oregon health authority.
- increases proficiency by reading materials and attending meetings, seminars, training conferences, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility.

education and experiencegraduation from high school or ged equivalent.
any equivalent combination of education and experience which ensures the candidates ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
special requirementsvalid state driver’s license with a clean driving record, oregon cdl preferred.
possession of, or ability to obtain, certifications in first aid and cpr, confined space entry, and forklift operation.
possession of, or the ability to acquire within two years of employment, level i water treatment certification or level i wastewater treatment operator certification.
selected candidate will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical which includes drug screening, and successfully pass the city of newberg fit for duty testing; job related tests as may be required.
must successfully pass a criminal history background check.
this position is considered a “first responder” which may be considered essential personnel. This means that in the event city offices close due to inclement weather, etc., you are still required to report to work for your scheduled shift, as well as any overtime or extra hours required.
this position is subject to a rotating “on-call” schedule and weekend shifts after training has been completed.
