The successful candidate for this recruitment will join the wastewater/stormwater crew.

Normally an employee will be appointed at the first step of the salary range established for their classification. The city may make an appointment above the first step at the sole discretion of the city.

GENERAL STATEMENT

Performs a variety of maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water, wastewater, street maintenance, storm drainage, grounds, and other utility systems.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direction of the Public Works Maintenance Superintendent or the Public Works Maintenance Supervisor. May receive work guidance from a PWM Lead/Crew Chief.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None. May provide work guidance or direction to Utility Technician I’s, entry level probationary employees, or seasonal positions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, in maintenance, repair, and construction of the storm, street, wastewater, water, grounds and facility systems.
  • Performs grounds activities including mowing, and vegetation maintenance.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weight in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand.
  • Operates a wide range of equipment including dump trucks, truck/trailer combinations, skid steer loaders, forklifts, street sweepers, high velocity cleanser, hydro cleaners, flusher trucks, pavement breakers, asphalt spreaders, crack sealers, backhoes, rollers, crane trucks etc.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Uses power and hand tools such as compressors, generators, jackhammers, pressure cleaners, chippers, hydraulic pumps and jacks and portable pumps.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, water supply, consumption, system cleaning, etc.
  • Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water, wastewater plugs or spills, street hazards, storm drainage, grounds or facility problems. Evaluates situation and explains findings to and explains findings to PW Maintenance Lead/Crew Chief, Public Works Maintenance Supervisor or Public Works Maintenance Superintendent.
  • Contacts residents and business owners in areas affected by maintenance activities, explains impacts on systems or area, and when it will be returned to normal service.
  • Determines the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water and wastewater lines from the appropriate sources (call for locates, 811) prior to excavation; locates City owned/operated underground utility lines and facilities including Storm, Water, and Wastewater piping.
  • Assists and manages material lists, ordering of materials and scheduling of projects and tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Assists in the training of lower-level employees and seasonal hires to increase their skills in the maintenance, construction and repair of water, wastewater, street maintenance, and storm drainage.
  • Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Must maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with City staff, other organizations and the public.
  • Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.
Sewer/Storm Crew
  • Installs, cleans and repairs sewer mains and laterals, culverts, catch basins.
  • Water quality cleaning, manhole cleaning, sewer line cleaning.
  • Vermin control.
  • Responds to complaints regarding utility systems, including wastewater plugs and/or spills, storm drainage problems or system problems.
  • CCTV operations
  • Inspects and maintains outfalls
  • Vegetive swells and pond maintenance
  • Construction of manholes and catch basins
