GE Appliances – EHS Specialist (Louisville, KY)

The EHS Specialist is a 100% on‑site individual contributor who reports to a senior EHS Leader and is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of GE Appliances’ EHS Management System within the organization and at the site.

Responsibilities
  • Provide functional EHS leadership and technical expertise to the site Operations team to support business needs based on compliance requirements, risk profile, change management and performance objectives.
  • Utilize engineering controls to eliminate hazards that cause or could cause injuries and incidents.
  • Assist the operational team in the annual self‑assessment of GEA EHS Management System elements.
  • Deliver simple, strong, and sustainable compliance and risk‑management solutions that are integrated into daily site operations and lean enterprise strategy.
  • Support development and implementation of the site‑specific injury reduction and EHS risk‑management plan, including specific actions, owners, and due dates.
  • Work with the EHS Leader to integrate actions required to achieve sustainable injury‑reduction results into the site’s operational excellence goals and metrics.
  • Support the execution of the annual site EHS training plan and ensure timely delivery of training, including new regulations and standards.
  • Support site environmental compliance (air emissions, water discharge, waste disposal & recycling) and contribute to annual environmental reporting obligations.
  • Work with stakeholders (project leaders) to complete contractor safe work plans, lock‑out‑tag‑out assessments, and new equipment reviews, which may require travel to the equipment manufacturer.
  • Respond to employee requests for EHS assistance and evaluation, and follow through to implement immediate and longer‑term corrective actions.
  • Participate in site incident investigations (injuries, fires, spills) to identify causal factors, implement prevention steps, and share lessons learned in a timely manner.
  • Learn and apply Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.
  • Use data analytics to analyze trends and identify site opportunities that may not be readily visible using only anecdotal feedback.
  • Learn how to use the business EHS management system (Gensuite).
  • Drive a collaborative, problem‑solving culture that supports open reporting and sustainable business results.
  • Provide excellent customer service and be a technical resource for the operations team to ensure regulatory and company compliance.
  • Respond to questions and/or concerns with timely, accurate responses.
  • Work with the site operations team to drive a culture of problem resolution and execute initiatives in the site’s annual EHS operating plan.
  • Implement EHS management systems, processes, and procedures to achieve sustainable compliance and business performance results.
  • Integrate EHS management tools into lean enterprise operating processes.
  • Drive solutions that address both short‑term operational risks and long‑term environmental liability management.
  • Drive standardization across the operation for the management of change and high‑risk processes, including overhead cranes, lock‑out‑tag‑out, and ergonomics.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of EHS experience implementing environmental, safety, or ergonomics compliance programs.
  • BS or BA degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline/experience.
  • Master’s degree in an EHS discipline is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT HMT, EPA regulations.
  • Experience working with a union workforce.
  • Knowledge and application of LEAN manufacturing and Six Sigma principles.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Audit experience or qualifications.
  • Certifications such as Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.
Working Conditions
  • Normal manufacturing environment; may involve lifting materials and product up to 30 pounds.
  • Must use safety equipment, including eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hard hats.
  • Frequent walking in a manufacturing plant environment.
  • Travel may be required: 10%–20%.
  • Work may involve off‑shift and weekend hours.
