Dialysis Nurse
Purpose
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.
Responsibilities- Assist in patient education regarding adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access.
- Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency.
- Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
- Obtain pre- and post‑treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation.
- Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders (blood flow, dialysate flow, ultrafiltration goal, treatment time).
- Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide interventions per physician orders or directed instructions.
- Monitor patient response, record vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
- Discontinue dialysis treatment, evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access, and obtain hemoglobinization and dressing as needed.
- Calculate and enter individual patient dialysis machine settings for ultrafiltration, treatment time, and UF modeling.
- Ensure safety alarms are enabled and conduct machine safety checks.
- Report significant changes or patient status to the registered nurse or supervisor.
- Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens for collection, ensuring proper labeling and storage.
- Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments per facility policy.
- Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under the supervision of a nurse.
- Follow all infection control policies and participate in infection control audits and education.
- Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis, coordinating transitional dialysis care and reinforcing education.
- Coordinate transitional care unit activities, including treatment setup, patient education of home dialysis options, and supply ordering.
- Enter all treatment data accurately and timely into the designated clinical application.
- Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensuring nursing signatures and required entries are present.
- Prepare initial patient chart for admission and compile appropriate paperwork.
- Print and manage lab requisitions and ensure specimens are collected by the appropriate lab courier.
- Assist with information collection for infection control audits and reinforce patient and staff adherence to infection control practices.
- Perform desk and computer work, interact with patients, staff, and physicians.
- Travel between assigned facilities and community locations; occasional regional and corporate meetings.
- Handle heavy lifting and patient ambulation, often requiring up to 15 pounds of force and occasional lifts up to 40 pounds.
- Frequent, prolonged standing; ability to bend over and use assist devices as needed.
- Requires passing the Ishihara Color‑Blindness test (accommodations considered).
- High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Must meet CMS‑approved state or national certification requirements within the required timeline.
- All applicable state licensure, education, and training must be current.
- Previous patient care experience in a hospital or related facility preferred.
- Completion of the organization’s dialysis training program and CPR certification required.
- Demonstrated commitment to organizational culture, values, and customer service standards.
Hourly Rate: $17–$27 (dependent on location and qualifications). Non‑bonus positions are hourly only; some positions may be eligible for performance‑based bonuses.
