The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a skilled and motivated electrical maintenance professional to join the Estates team on a fixed‑term basis until 31 March 2028, working Trustwide from the Freeman Hospital. This role involves maintaining and supporting critical building services infrastructure across one of the UK’s leading hospital Trusts. Main duties of the jobYou will be responsible for the calibration, fault finding, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of engineering plant and complex electrical infrastructure. This includes standby generators, single and 3‑phase electrical systems, control circuitry, and other essential hospital plant and equipment. The role involves both planned preventative maintenance and reactive works, ensuring systems remain safe, compliant and fully operational to support clinical services.
Jobresponsibilities
- Install, maintain, service and repair the full range of estates electrical equipment, plant and infrastructure.
- Carry out fault finding and repairs on complex systems including electrical distribution (LV), fire alarms, emergency lighting, IPS/UPS and standby generation systems.
- Undertake planned preventative maintenance, inspections, testing and commissioning in line with Trust standards and procedures.
- Act as Competent Person for low‑voltage electrical systems in accordance with Health Technical Memorandum guidance.
- Perform condition surveys and evaluate inspection and test reports to support safe and effective asset management.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to Estates colleagues, contractors and clinical staff to ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures.
- Plan, prioritise and coordinate maintenance tasks, including managing complex activities such as system shutdowns.
- Respond to reactive maintenance requests and emergency situations, ensuring minimal disruption to patient care.
- Use engineering drawings, technical specifications and specialist tools and test equipment to carry out works safely and effectively.
- Maintain accurate records, certification and reports using Trust IT systems.
- Supervise and support maintenance assistants, apprentices and contractors as required.
- Contribute to training and knowledge sharing within the team, supporting the development of others.
- Work flexibly across Trust sites and adapt to the demands of a live healthcare environment.
- To install, maintain, service and repair the full range of estates specialist equipment, plant and infrastructure.
- Provide technical advice to other estates maintenance staff and contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures.
- Act in the role of Competent Person, as defined by the Health Technical Memorandum, for the Electrical Distribution (LV) system.
- BTEC, HNC/HND, approved apprenticeship, City and Guilds or NVQ 3 technician certificate or equivalent qualifications in a relevant topic.
- Qualification and experience in fire alarms, control systems.
- Level 3 qualification in inspection, testing and initial verification.
- Experience in a hospital maintenance environment.
- Experience of working in an industrial environment.
- Electrical services systems maintenance.
- Expertise and a full understanding of electrical services and electrical control systems in a healthcare environment.
- Thorough working knowledge of Building Management Systems.
- Detailed working knowledge of Electrical Distribution (LV), fire alarm systems, emergency lighting systems, IPS/UPS and standby electrical generation systems.
- Hospital experience.
- Electrical testing and inspection.
- Understanding of mechanical systems.
- Fit and mobile.
- Able to make workload assessments and allocation.
- Ability to evaluate and solve problems in situ.
- Ability to communicate verbally by phone and in writing to senior management and clinical users throughout the Trust.
- Computer and IT literate; ability to use tools and test equipment.
- Electrical installation experience.
