Elementary Principal Position

The Newington Public Schools is seeking a highly dynamic and skilled instructional leader for our Elementary Principal vacancy scheduled to begin in July 2026 at John Paterson Elementary School. The principal is the administrative officer and educational leader of the school. As a member of the leadership team, the principal is responsible to the Superintendent of Schools or the superintendent's designee and works cooperatively with program supervisors and other staff members.

General responsibilities include: providing leadership in fostering a school climate conducive to learning and the development of individual students, implementing and monitoring all building level programs to insure quality instruction and balance among program offerings within the school, and developing and implementing a program of public relations in order to further the community's understanding and support of the school and the educational program.

Essential job functions include: interpreting and implementing Board policies and administrative regulations, directing the activities of school professional and non-professional staff members in the performance of their duties, supervising and evaluating members of the school staff, fostering good interpersonal relations among students, staff, parents and community, supervising the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students, establishing guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline, assisting in the recruiting, screening, training, hiring, and assigning of school staff, reporting to appropriate central office administrative staff regarding the needs of the school with respect to personnel, equipment, supplies, and curriculum, interpreting the school's program to parents and the community and enlisting the participation of parents and the community in school life, assuming responsibility for the safety and security of the school plant for all students and staff, assisting in the management and preparation of the school budget, conducting meetings of the staff, as necessary, for the proper functioning of the school or one of its component sub-groups, supervising the school planning and placement team process, preparing and/or supervising the preparation of reports, records, lists, and other paperwork appropriate to the school's administration and/or required by the district, assisting in providing opportunities for appropriate clubs, athletic activities and other extra-curricular activities, assisting in coordinating community use of school facilities, keeping the superintendent informed of the school's activities and problems, assisting in developing and implementing professional development programs for appropriate staff, coordinating and supervising all student testing and evaluation, using assessment data to guide and improve student learning, working cooperatively with other administrators to coordinate K-12 curriculum, instruction and assessment, and keeping abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.

Required minimum qualifications include: graduation from an accredited college with an advanced level degree, Masters or beyond with course work in Educational Administration and, a minimum of five (5) years' experience in education and any combination of training and experience which provides a demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the position. Connecticut State Department of Education Certification required:
Intermediate Administrator & Supervisor (092).
