The Facilities Design Unit provides in‑house and consultant engineering design and technical support services in Civil, Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. The Architectural Engineer Trainee works within the Architectural section, preparing in‑house designs and reviewing designs prepared by consulting firms for roadway and vertical construction/building systems.
Responsibilities- Develop architectural plans for new and renovated highway maintenance and repair facilities
- Coordinate with other design disciplines to develop plans and specifications
- Administer contractor submittal reviews
- Space planning and conceptual layout
- Develop Revit models
- Analyze building spaces for code compliance
- Other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of basic transportation engineering theories, principles and methods
- Skill in using drafting, calculating instruments and other computer applications
- Ability to perform mathematical computations, draft accurate drawings, and prepare minor design and structural details
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure from the Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors
- Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) licensure from the Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors
- 20‑302 may be substituted for the General Experience requirement
- Accredited bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering or an associated field (civil, structural, mechanical) with a minor in architecture by May 2026
- Academic, internship, and/or work experience in architecture or architectural engineering
- 3.0 or higher GPA in relevant architecture courses
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and EIT licensure
- Experience with Revit or similar design software; code analysis; vertical building design
- Experience interpreting and preparing construction documents across Mechanical, Electrical, and Structural disciplines
- Experience with CSI specification writing and interpretation
- Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines; proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Project
- Experience coordinating with Department units, consultants, municipalities, agencies, and the public
- Experience analyzing data and proposing solutions; strong interpersonal, presentation, written, and oral communication skills
- Experience preparing technical engineering and administrative reports
- Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license required
- Travel may be required
