The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (CTDOT), is now accepting applications for a Transportation Engineer 3 (Engineering) position within the Division of Traffic Engineering, Traffic Project Design, in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, at our Headquarters in Newington, CT.

The role leads the development of projects and initiatives that enhance the safety, capacity, and efficiency of Connecticut’s transportation system. They manage and coordinate traffic designs, studies, and investigations on state roadways to address complex roadway and multi‑modal challenges and reduce crashes through innovative solutions such as modern roadway configurations, traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings proven to improve safety and save lives.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)

This class is accountable for acting as a working lead who assists a supervisor in supervising a designated group of employees and/or performing complex engineering or related tasks in areas such as administration, bridge design, drainage, electronics, foundations, hydraulics, maintenance, operations, pavement management, regulatory compliance, rehabilitation, research, traffic, or utilities.

Examples of Duties
  • Oversee work of lower‑level engineers and perform complex design work for foundations and bridges.
  • Conduct field inspections of bridge sites and structural conditions to collect information for design and repair recommendations.
  • Serve as liaison between towns and the state as consulting engineer in bridge repair and reconstruction projects.
  • Research materials for bridges, highways, and structures; oversee laboratory testing of soil and materials for geotechnical reports.
  • Review and provide technical advice on storm sewer and culvert designs; prepare computations and recommendations.
  • Attend field reviews for new highway project designs and recommend drainage improvements.
  • Coordinate electrical and traffic control system designs; prepare specifications, estimates, and oversight of construction.
  • Prepare complex reports and analyses for traffic control devices, signage, and safety evaluations.
  • Represent the department in public meetings and negotiate with the Federal Highway Administration regarding reimbursement.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Extensive knowledge of transportation engineering principles including bridge, highway, and traffic design.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and technical report development skills.
  • Proficient communication, both oral and written.
  • Ability to interpret and apply information systems and technologies.
  • Supervisory and interpersonal skills to oversee team activities.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in engineering and three (3) years of experience in transportation engineering.
