Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Central Surveys office, is accepting applications for a Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) with a target class of Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) in Newington, CT.

Department of Transportation Headquarters, Newington, CT - Full‑time, 40 hours per week
- Monday through Friday, first shift 6:30 AM–3:00 PM
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required
- P‑4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit
- Travel required
The Central Surveys Section performs various functions, including:
- Performing mapping, field, and land survey duties
- Utilizing Computer‑Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system and other computer applications
- Preparing, revising, and editing property acquisition and release mapping
- Developing topographic maps and Digital Terrain Models (DTM)
- Utilizing ArcGIS for GIS applications
- Operating survey field instruments
- Performing complex computations for survey control networks
- Performing related duties as required
As a Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor), you will:
- Problem‑solve, recommend, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner
- Contribute to safe and efficient transportation improvements
- Utilize CADD software (e.g., Micro Station) and Microsoft Office applications
- Provide verbal and written communication to a diverse population
- Prioritize work and meet deadlines
- Read, analyze, and prepare construction plans and estimates
- Perform a wide variety of duties as technical skills are acquired during training
- Read, analyze, and interpret property records

Transportation Engineer Trainee → Transportation Engineer 1 → Transportation Engineer 2 → Transportation Engineer 3 → Transportation Supervising Engineer → Transportation Principal Engineer.
- Transportation Engineer Trainee: $74,445 / annually
- After 1 year, promotion to Transportation Engineer 1: $83,074–$102,165 / annually
- After 2 years, promotion to Transportation Engineer 2: $93,526–$120,789 / annually
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree.
NOTE:
If the target job classification requires specific licensure or a bachelor’s degree in a specific area, those requirements are mandatory for appointment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure from the Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, consistent with C.G.S.
- Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) licensure from the Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, consistent with C.G.S.
- Land Surveyor (LS) licensure from the Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, consistent with C.G.S.
- Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) licensure from the Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, consistent with C.G.S.
- Level III certification, from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), in one of the following Civil Engineering Technology Programs
- Transportation Construction Inspection Program – Highway Construction Inspection
- Construction Materials Testing Program – Asphalt, Concrete, or Soils
- Transportation Program – Highway Materials, Highway Surveys or Highway Construction Inspection
- Level III Survey Technician Certification from the National Society of Professional Surveyors
- Land survey or civil engineering degree or license (LS or LSIT)
- Experience with CADD, preferably Bentley Micro Station
- Experience with land surveying practices and principles
- Experience performing complex mathematical calculations
- Experience working with survey and construction plans
- Experience with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), including Real‑Time Kinematic (RTK) and other static/real‑time networks
- Experience adjusting traverses and control networks, level runs
- Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license required
- Travel may be required
