Overview
Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) in the Central Surveys office of Connecticut Department of Transportation. Target class:
Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering).
Location:
Newington, CT.
- Full time, 40 hours/week, Monday–Friday, 6:30 am–3:00 pm.
- Travel required.
- Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license required.
- Under P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit.
- Perform mapping, field, and land survey duties.
- Use Computer‑Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and other computer applications.
- Prepare, revise, and edit property acquisition and release mapping.
- Develop topographic mapping and Digital Terrain Models (DTM).
- Utilize ArcGIS for GIS applications.
- Operate survey field instruments.
- Perform complex computations for survey control networks.
- Read, analyze, and interpret property records, construction plans, and estimates.
- Communicate verbally and in writing with diverse populations.
- Prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Problem‑solve and implement effective solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Engineering, or Construction Management.
- Possession of professional license(s) meeting or exceeding listed qualifications (PE, EIT, LS, LSIT, NICET Level III, or Level III Survey Technician Certification).
- Land survey or civil engineering degree or license (LS/LSIT).
- Experience with CADD, preferably Bentley Micro Station.
- Experience with land surveying practices and principles.
- Experience performing complex mathematical calculations.
- Experience working with survey and construction plans.
- Experience with GNSS, including Real Time Kinematic (RTK).
- Experience adjusting traverses and control networks, and level runs.
- Basic transportation engineering theories, principles, and methods.
- Proficiency in drafting and calculation instruments and computer applications.
- Mathematical computation capability, accurate drawing production, and minor design and structural detail preparation.
Transportation Engineer Trainee: $74,445 annually.
After one‑year training: promoted to Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) with salary $83,074–$102,165 annually.
After two years as Transportation Engineer 1: promoted to Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering) with salary $93,526–$120,789 annually.
Working ConditionsExposure to risk of injury from highway or construction site activities; moderate discomfort from year‑round weather.
May require traveling.
