Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Central Surveys office, is now accepting applications for a Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) with a target class of Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) in Newington, CT.
Current students who will be graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Engineering or Construction Management by the end of August 2026 are strongly encouraged to apply.

- Location:
Department of Transportation Headquarters, Newington, CT - Full Time, 40 hours per week – Monday through Friday
- First Shift, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required and must be maintained
- P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit
- Applicants must be available to travel
- Perform mapping, field, and land survey duties
- Utilize Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system and other computer applications
- Prepare, revise, and edit property acquisition and release mapping
- Develop topographic mapping and Digital Terrain Models (DTM)
- Use ArcGIS software for Geographic Information System (GIS) applications
- Operate survey field instruments
- Perform complex computations for survey control networks
- Perform related duties as required
- Problem solve, recommend, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner
- Contribute to providing safe and efficient transportation improvements for the traveling public
- Utilize Micro Station and other applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel
- Provide verbal and written communication to a diverse population
- Prioritize work and meet deadlines
- Read and analyze or prepare construction plans and estimates
- Perform a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during training
- Read, analyze, and interpret property records
- Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Engineering or Construction Management (current students graduating by August 2026)
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license (required)
- Available to travel
- Will be part of the P‑4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit

Promotional Opportunity
Salary- Transportation Engineer Trainee – $74,445 annually
- After successful completion of a one (1) year training program, promoted to Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) – $83,074 – $102,165 annually
- After successful completion of two (2) years as a Transportation Engineer 1, promoted to Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering) – $93,526 – $120,789 annually
