Transportation Engineer Trainee (annual salary $76,307). After one year of training, promotion to Transportation Engineer 1 (Engineering) with a salary range of $85,151 – $104,720. After one to two years as an Engineering 1, promotion to Transportation Engineer 2 (Engineering) with a salary range of $95,865 – $123,809.
Responsibilities- Perform a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during the training period.
- Work as part of an engineering team responsible for developing projects that improve safety, capacity, and efficiency of the state’s transportation system.
- Assist in design of intersection improvements, modern roundabouts, multi‑use trails, corridor improvements, complete street upgrades, emergency repairs, and more.
- Support projects involving drainage enhancements, low impact development design, and congestion reduction improvements.
- Bachelor’s degree is required (eligible to be a pre‑graduate student in civil engineering, graduating by May 2027).
- Knowledge of basic transportation engineering theories, principles and methods.
- Skill in drafting, calculation, and computer applications.
- Basic math proficiency and the ability to produce accurate drawings.
- Valid driver’s license and eligibility to hold an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license (PE and EIT licenses are acceptable substitutions).
- Accredited bachelor’s degree in civil engineering by May 2027.
- Transportation engineering coursework and knowledge of transportation concepts.
- Minimum 3.0 GPA in relevant engineering courses.
- EIT licensure.
- Experience working in a collaborative team environment.
- Internship or work experience in civil engineering.
- Proficiency with CAD or other engineering software.
- Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
- Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- May be required to travel.
Incumbents may be exposed to risk of injury from highway, construction site, or on‑site environments, and may experience moderate physical discomfort from year‑round weather conditions.
