The Role
Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering) supporting the Division of Construction Operations – Advisory Team in Newington, CT. Provides technical support to improve design, construction, and administration of statewide construction projects. Focus on roadway structure and pavement, performs field reviews, develops specifications, trains engineers, researches technologies, and assists with related assignments.
Responsibilities- Support construction engineers on best practices and compliance with construction specifications, plans, and contracts.
- Conduct field reviews to disseminate proper construction practices and capture lessons learned feedback.
- Identify recurring design and construction issues, recommend improvements, and help develop and improve specifications.
- Conduct training sessions for construction engineers.
- Research, promote, and support new technologies and construction practices to improve performance, safety, and cost.
- Assist DCO with related assignments.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management and two (2) years of professional transportation construction engineering or transportation engineering experience.
- Substitutions:
Land Surveyor, Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) licensure, Level III NICET, Level III Survey Technician, AWS CWI certification, or a Master’s degree for one year of experience.
- Experience in related transportation engineering.
- Engineer‑In‑Training (FE/EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
- Experience with quality assurance/control for paving operations.
- Inspection experience of pavements and bridge membranes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, Bluebeam, SharePoint, AASHTOWare, or similar construction reporting software.
- Knowledge of transportation construction engineering principles in construction, surveys, and materials testing.
- Strong CADD (Computer Aided Design) application skills.
- Technical competence in preparing engineering and administrative reports.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Analytical and problem‑solving abilities with use of complex mathematical calculations, interpreting plans, and specifications.
- Required licensure: NETTCP certification may be required.
- Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license required.
- Travel required.
May be exposed to hazards in highway or construction environments and moderate discomfort from year‑round weather conditions.
