Position
Transportation Engineer 1 (Engineering) – Traffic Signals, Electrical Section – Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Division of Traffic Engineering – Newington, CT.
Role OverviewThe Transportation Engineer 1 (Engineering) will:
- Design and review electrical elements for traffic control signals and other electrical needs on state roadways.
- Prepare plans using CAD software.
- Prepare specifications and estimates for electrical elements related to transportation projects.
- Coordinate with utilities on traffic engineering signal projects and ensure NESC, NEC, and PURA codes/regulations are met.
- Review and approve product data submittals from contractors for signal equipment.
- Conduct field inspections and ensure electrical elements of traffic signals are constructed per contract documents.
- Prepare power letters used to determine electricity costs for state-owned signal equipment.
- Provide technical assistance in researching and developing specifications for new technology.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering and one (1) year of experience in transportation engineering or transportation construction engineering.
- For state employees, the one (1) year of experience must have been at the level of a Transportation Engineer Trainee.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree requirement.
- Engineer-In‑Training (EIT) licensure may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree requirement.
- Accredited bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
- Experience preparing plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic signal projects and reviewing traffic signal designs prepared by consultants.
- Experience managing traffic signal installation projects including coordination with utilities.
- Experience establishing traffic signal design practices and maintaining and updating traffic design specifications.
- Experience with CTDOT Standard Specifications and CTDOT Design Manuals.
- Experience using CAD and other engineering design software, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Access.
- Experience with presentation and oral and written communication skills.
- Experience efficiently managing large workloads.
- Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Incumbents may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
- Incumbents may be required to travel.
Incumbents may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from highway or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year-round weather conditions.
