Job Summary
Transportation Engineer 3 – Engineering, Division of Traffic Engineering, Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Headquarters, Newington, CT.
Responsible for developing projects and initiatives that enhance the safety, capacity, and efficiency of Connecticut’s transportation system. Leads traffic designs, studies, and investigations, and reduces crashes through innovative solutions.
Position Highlights- First Shift, Full Time, 40 hours per week
- Monday through Friday
- Location:
Newington, CT – Hybrid (in‑office/telework) and alternate schedules may be available
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
Responsibilities- Lead development of traffic engineering projects and studies.
- Coordinate and manage traffic designs, signals, signage, and pavement markings.
- Conduct field inspections and data collection for design and safety analysis.
- Oversee work of lower‑level engineers and provide technical guidance.
- Prepare and review engineering reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Represent the department at state, town, and public meetings.
- Assist in the development and review of department contracts and policies.
- Provide expert witness input in court cases and regulatory matters.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
- Three (3) years of transportation engineering experience, including at least one (1) year at a working level.
- Valid EIT or PE license is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of transportation engineering principles, bridge and highway design, drainage, and traffic analysis.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to analyze plans, estimates, and technical reports.
- Accredited civil engineering degree.
- Experience with traffic control signals, signage, pavement marking, and safety evaluations.
- Experience managing complex federal and state‑funded traffic projects.
- Proficiency with Office
365, Microsoft Project, and COMPASS. - Experience coordinating with Department units, consultants, and agencies.
- Experience leading people and managing tasks.
- Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- Must hold or be willing to obtain an EIT or PE license.
May involve travel, field visits, and exposure to construction and highway environments. Occasional work outside normal hours may be required.
