The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), is now accepting applications for a Transportation Engineer 3 (Construction Engineering) position in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction within the Central Surveys Geodetics section.

THE ROLE

The Central Surveys Geodetics Section establishes and maintains horizontal and vertical survey control throughout the state; maintains access in Connecticut to the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) by maintaining the nine (9) base stations operating statewide, which is part of the NOAA CORS Network (NCN). Surveyors, engineers, scientists, GIS users, and other GNSS users access this network to ensure a consistent and accurate coordinate system for planning, design and construction of CTDOT projects;

partners with the federal government and the University of Connecticut (UCONN) in the development, implementation, and operation of the ACORN real-time GNSS network.

The selected Transportation Engineer 3 will be responsible for supervising and/or leading staff, conducting extensive geodetic, photogrammetric, bathymetric, and LiDAR control surveys, and directing field crews to perform this work in an efficient and safe manner. This role will also serve as the CT State Geodetic Coordinator, which is the liaison between the state and National Geodetic Survey.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs field surveys in support of the district survey forces;
  • Ensures the quality and completeness of collected data and deliverables for geodetic survey tasks;
  • Trains crew members;
  • Provides technical guidance to CTDOT survey operations, municipalities, private survey companies, and the public;
  • Researches, recovers, and sets geodetic control; and
  • Implements new technology, specifications, techniques, procedures, and internal policies responsible for the research, testing and procurement of survey equipment and software for the four (4) CTDOT District survey offices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management and three (3) years of experience in transportation construction engineering.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the working level in a professional transportation construction engineering capacity.
