Assists evening school employees in maintaining order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating violations of school board policies, detaining students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events, and ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Responsible for a safe, secure, and orderly school environment through routine patrol, crime prevention, surveillance, investigation, emergency response, and related activities.
ESSENTIALJOB FUNCTIONS
- Receives supervision from administration for enforcement of all school rules.
- Assumes primary responsibility for supervising school grounds and providing communication to correct problems.
- Coordinates with staff to promote physical security measures at school buildings.
- Provides initial contact with the police department if necessary.
- Protects school property.
- Maintains visibility in the school building and property.
- Discourages loitering and inappropriate behavior; removes intruders or refers to the Police Department.
- Provides assistance to staff as appropriate.
- Provides other assistance as requested by the administration.
- Works standard hours 3:00-9:00 PM, Monday‑Friday; additional hours/days as needed.
- Secures the Adult Education Program and other activities such as sporting events and after‑school programs.
- Conducts general patrols of the building throughout the evening.
- May perform additional tasks and duties as requested.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Basic state and local laws, institutional security, safety measures, first aid, and CPR techniques.
- Ability to learn and interpret school policies; respond appropriately to sensitive and emergency situations; communicate effectively; exercise good judgment; establish cooperative working relationships with students and staff; follow oral and written instructions.
- Good oral communication, human relations and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to stand, walk, and patrol assigned building and grounds for long periods of time; perform bending, twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, crawling, crouching, stooping, and kneeling.
- Sufficient strength to restrain/detain aggressive individuals.
- Ability to immediately respond to an emergency anywhere in the school or any other Newington school as needed.
Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Examples include experience in law enforcement, corrections, private or public security. State (police) certification is preferred.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATEValid State of Connecticut driver’s license.
