Overview
The ideal Safety Director will primarily be responsible for leading and managing Brent Scarbrough & Company's safety initiatives and safety loss‑control programs, in addition to developing a culture of safety and risk management that others emulate. The Safety Director ensures the program complies with OSHA and other construction industry standards.
Responsibilities- Lead development of and articulate the company’s safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures to build a safety culture dedicated to best practices.
- Provide proactive leadership and assume ownership of building an elite safety culture by anticipating problems, providing solutions, sharing knowledge and training at all levels, interacting with clients, subcontractors and inspectors, and creating an environment of learning, mentoring and empowerment.
- Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternatives, monitor results, and make improvements or take corrective actions.
- Ensure safety and health training meets the needs of internal and external (client and regulatory entities) requirements so staff has the training to safely perform tasks and jobs.
- Lead incident investigations.
- Manage hazard assessment activities by conducting and/or supervising safety inspections and analyzing inspection and incident data to identify opportunities for preventive and corrective practices.
- Develop annual plans and budgets for safety and health initiatives, including training.
- Lead and manage human assets to develop a high‑performance, customer‑oriented safety team through hiring, motivating, coaching, appraising, rewarding, disciplining, and addressing complaints and resolving staff issues.
- Manage general‑liability, auto, and workers’ compensation claims.
- Manage return‑to‑work and modified‑duty programs.
- Lead and direct the safety committee and meetings.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety, safety management, construction or related field.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in heavy civil construction safety management.
- Minimum 5 years of experience managing and leading a structured safety program; experience as a self‑performing general contractor or specialty contractor is preferable.
- In‑depth technical knowledge of construction‑related OSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory standards, and ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement effective corrective practices.
- Experience managing staff and third‑party hired firms.
- Effective communicator capable of generating professional written material.
- Extensive travel by vehicle.
- Significant work at construction job sites during all stages and in all weather conditions.
- Ability to perform activities requiring use of arms and legs, including climbing ladders and scaffolding, lifting and handling materials, walking and balancing, and stooping.
- Ability to speak, hear, and understand detailed information through oral communication.
- Ability to see clearly and recognize small details.
