Position: LIBRARY ASSISTANT

Overview

The City of Newport Beach is seeking a highly motivated and detail oriented individual to join the team as a Library Assistant in the Library Services Department. There is currently one full-time vacancy in the Mariners Library Branch. The position provides assistance to the public in the location and selection of library materials and services. The individual will perform routine library work and participate in activities of a specialized library function such as reference, cultural arts, programming and/or literacy services.

Selection

Components
  • Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of Thursday, February 19, 2026, or at 150 applications—whichever comes first.
  • Online Exam: The most qualified applicants will be invited to take an online exam. This is tentatively scheduled for the week of February 23, 2026. Top scoring applicants will be invited to a virtual interview.
  • Virtual Interview: Tentatively scheduled for the week of March 2, 2026. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur in the Central Library, Corona del Mar and Mariners branches.
Career Path

This is the entry-to-journey level class in the para-professional library series. The series includes Librarian I, Librarian II, Librarian III, Library Services Manager, and Library Services Director.

Schedule

This position works a flexible schedule of up to 40 hours per week and will include days, nights and weekends based on the needs of the library.

Qualifications

Experience: No experience is required. Library experience preferred.

Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

License/Certificate: Because some duties may require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record may be required.
