This recruitment is open and promotional, meaning all are welcome to apply and current employees in permanent positions are eligible to receive seniority credit and promotional placement once passing all exams. These positions work 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, 10 months per year, although this may vary by school site. There are multiple openings located at various elementary schools throughout the district to include:
Kaiser, Newport Elementary, Newport Heights, Pomona, Whittier, and Wilson. Please apply online at

Under the direction of an assigned Principal, assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment; assist teachers with the preparation of instructional materials; tutor students in assigned subject areas.

Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and some experience working with children in an organized setting.

Exam Weight:
Supplemental Questions (Qualifying);
Written Examination 50%;
Qualifications Appraisal Interview 50%.

The supplemental questions to the application will be reviewed and rated for certification. These questions are required at the time of application and are qualifying. An eligibility list will be established for successful candidates which will be used to fill substitute and regular positions during the life of the list. Examinations and interviewing for creating the eligible list will be conducted virtually using different online/internet platforms that require video recording or conferencing capabilities, as well as access to a computer with an internet connection and basic Microsoft Office Suite Software.

The virtual written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of March 16th. The virtual qualifications appraisal interview (oral exam) is tentatively scheduled for the week of March 23rd. You will be notified via email, as indicated on your application, regarding your ability to participate in the examination phase of the recruitment.

Essential duties include:

• Assist a certificated teacher with the implementation of lesson plans and conducting instructional activities; assist in preparing materials used in instructional activities; grade student tests and assignments; record grades; maintain student files as assigned.
• Tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; direct group activities of students as assigned.
• Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating equipment and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.
• Assist in monitoring lunchroom, recess and other playground activities; lead indoor and outdoor activities planned by the teacher; accompany students on field trips as assigned.
• Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials.
• Assist in collecting and organizing data on student learning.
• Perform special projects and prepare materials on behalf of the classroom teacher.
• Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom and during outdoor activities according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
• Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a calculator, copier, printer, laminator, a computer and assigned software.
• Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; administer basic first aid as needed and seek assistance for non-routine illnesses and injuries.
• Perform minor housekeeping tasks in maintaining a neat, clean and orderly and safe classroom and playground atmosphere.
