The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

The selected candidate will be part of a team that is responsible for integrating robotics into shipyard operations, with a focus on designing, developing, and supporting implementation of robotic systems that enhance productivity, efficiency, and safety in the shipyard. This will involve hands on application of robotics applied to various fabrication and inspection processes for the construction and overhaul of submarines and aircraft carriers.

The candidate will be expected to integrate various sensors and vision systems inclusive of system programming to enable robotics to meet the needs of the shipyard. The candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to achieve our business objectives. It is expected that the candidate will have an outright passion for robotics.

The candidate may also conduct/coordinate interdepartmental and/or external research efforts and/or project management activities. Responsible for project execution including project plans, communication, internal/external customer briefings, technical reviews, test plan development, and various other R&D related activities.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have
  • Practical experience with robotics integration, including design, development, and testing of robotic systems even if at a hobby level
  • Experience with computer vision, machine learning, and sensor integration
  • Demonstrated Python or C++ programming expertise
  • Familiarity with ROS2 and/or Poly Scope environments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to clearly present technical approaches and findings
  • Experience with executing all phases of a robotics project (e.g., design, development, testing, and deployment)
  • Demonstrated project management experience gained through practical and/or academic experience
  • Ability to perform technical work and/or project execution of emerging technologies, process development, test plan development, R&D, materials analysis, technical scouting, and/or complex technical analyses
  • Certification in robotics or a related field (e.g., Certified Robotics Engineer)
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Experience working in a shipyard or manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and version control systems (e.g., Git)
